C'mon Baby, Light My Midsummer Fires

Well, it's that time of year again. In light of recent events, Midsummer AKA Saint John's Day seems a bit more resonant than it has before. Of course, we have a newly-minted Federal holiday that falls a mere two days short of the Solstice, in much the same way our national Bacchanalia falls three days short of the Equinox. But that's all coincidental, surely.

But, oh boy; have you read the news today?

It's Beginning to Look a Lot like Mithras.

I've been ranting on about Mithras since I opened this blog and lo and behold, Bloomberg finally premiere their new SPACE headquarters with the enclosed Mithraeum, smack dab in the middle of the Never-Ending Ritual. And a day after the Grand Lodge of England posted video of the Tercentennial at the Royal Albert Hall on Halloween.

I'm sorry; is this actually the real world or am I in some kind of Audrey Horne coma and am lucid-dreaming old Secret Sun posts all night and day?

The 2013 Ausurs®: Better Late than Never

Back in 2007 I started blogging about Jack Kirby in the context of synchro/datamysticism, and looking at the almost-unfathomable numinous power his work contained.

The first series I did here looked at his 1983 miniseries Silver Star and its obvious influence on the then-popular/now-forgotten TV show Heroes.

Star Wars Symbol Cycle: Empire, or the Hanged Man

Note prominent Solar Cross looming over the action

On the surface of it,
The Empire Strikes Back is a old-time pulp adventure story and as such is the favorite of many Star Wars fans. The interesting thing about the film is how the story itself-- a middle piece with no dramatic resolution or climax-- is overshadowed by a stirring spiritual homily delivered by a badly-animated puppet (of all things).

Stairway to Sirius: Dogtown Blues

The Sirens, from last year's season finale

Exactly a year before the season premiere of Californication on Sunday, we looked at the extremely incongruous Sirius symbolism that was all over last season's finale. It was all part of an absolute orgy of Sirius and Merpeople symbols that was floating through the Memestream at the time.

Secret Sun Picture Parade: The Falcon has Landed

UFOs continue to make the headlines, particularly these stories from China. My automatic reaction is to dismiss any sighting in the mainstream media as a hoax and/or a setup, but the story being circulated about military testing seems more than a bit off to me, as if the Chinese are trying to control the narrative by leading people to believe it's all some kind of test.

Yahooccultism: Crowned with the Sun

You know, I never noticed how much the CMS installation at CERN resembled old Sol. No surprise they're searching for the "God Particle" there. Hopefully the overweening narcissism of the current generation of scientists won't be all of our undoing.

I must admit that very time I see a CERN headline I can't help but flash back to The Quiet Earth.

Dog Days: The Hits Just Keep On Coming

NOTE: Scroll down for updates

Well, the Sun is blazing all across the globe. It's summer- the Dog Days- and the symbols are flying like grackles in the grove. It seems like I'm doing a lot of these posts recently, but you gotta fish when they're bitin'.

That blue and gold Sol there is from a story in the UK press- the British company is paying off illegal immigrants at Calais to go back home. I guess wages have been driven down enough.

For the time being, at least.

Mermaids and Man-Things

Or should that say "Best of Sumer?"

Well, summer's here and the time is right for Sirius symbolism. Here's my old neighbor Marky Mark hamming it up with Will Farrell, who'll be playing the part of Oannes for us. That 116 sure is a strange number, until you add it up and get- of course- 17.

Summer Solstice Festivals 2010

Here's a highlight reel from the Fremont/Seattle Solstice parade, which was held on Saturday. The most elaborate of these parades takes place in Santa Barbara, but won't be held until later in the week.

What the Hell is Going on Up There... or Down Here?

At the same time (late January 2010) that the anomalous objects were photographed in orbit around the Sun we saw bizarre aerial phenomena over Australia, specifically bizarre formations in non-random geometrical arrangements. The first of these appeared two days before the objects were photographed around the Sun.

Wyrd New Jersey: The Necropolis, or Ritual Done Right

The thing about New Jersey is that you never know what you might find hiding in plain sight. The place is so littered with arcane symbolism it's easy to take for granted. For instance, this cemetery in the rolling hills at the foot of the Skylands caught the attention of even a jaded symbol-junkie like myself.

That strange obelisk sans capstone is particularly interesting in and of itself, given that it's oriented to the cardinal points. Even more so when placed in context with some of the other items around it.

Secret Sunday: Beltane Edition

Well, Saturday was May Day and there was chaos and confusion all across the globe, including an alleged failed IED in Times Square. There were also several protests over the new Arizona immigration law. But you can read about all of that on any old website: let's go to Edinburgh for the yearly Beltane Fire Festival, which drew 12,000 people this year.

A goodly number of them were nude and smeared in red body paint, I might add.

The Secret of Europa and the Star of the Sea

The Secret is a straight-to-DVD supernatural soap opera starring David Duchovny and Lili Taylor and Olivia Thirlby. It's kind of a paranormal Freaky Friday - Duchovny plays an optometrist whose wife and daughter are killed in an traffic accident, but the daughter then returns to life possessed by the spirit and personality of her mother.

When Mythworlds Collide: Doctor Who goes 2012

 ...well, almost.

The Fourth Doctor and his companions come across an ark sent into space to avoid an oncoming solar storm set to wipe out all life on Earth. Oddly prophetic; We're hearing some rumblings in the underground that the current space craze is in fact in preparation for the solar apocalypse in 2012, and that the elite will all be whisked off to Mars to sit out the cinderization of the planet.

Apocalyporn: 2012 or 6 to 4

Seeing that Nineties were the Sixties in reverse, it's strange how much the Naughties feel like the Seventies.

We have a deep recession, an President more interested in platitudes than policy, a mass culture obsessed with sports and celebrity and a fashion culture fixated on decadence and 'transgression'. American politics is still fixated on the same old social wedge issues.

Transformers: The Eternals by Any Other Name...

OK, I finally saw it. In optimal conditions, no pun intended. It was the 10 PM showing on July 4th, so we literally had the theater all to ourselves. Got a parking spot right outside the front door. The environment is usually very important to me when I'm watching a movie - and this was definitely a movie where I wanted to pay close attention - so the absence of NJ knuckleheads was appreciated.
