SynchroCinema Seminar: Midnight Special (2016)

Being the age I am and having consumed as much pop culture junk as I have, I’ve come to a point in which I have near-zero interest in "escapist" entertainment.

Mother May Eye? Raised by Wolves

When I first heard of HBOs new series Raised by Wolves, I yawned. It looked like yet another blast of anti-human brainwash (or "the Agenda") in the guise of "science fiction." It also looked incredibly dated and rather desperate, as it posits a universe in which human-like androids and interstellar space travel are actually possible.

Sad, isn't it?

Serpents, Sirens, Solstices, and Supernovas

Well, Happy Belated Summer Solstice to all you Northern Hemishere Secret Sunners out there. Hope you enjoyed it, if that's your particular bag. If not, well hey; buy yourself something nice today.

Orange is the New Black Magic

Just wanted to drop in with a couple quick updates on recent events and topics we've been looking at here. There is so much going on and things are moving so quickly that I don't really have the luxury of time with this material. By the time you cover one story, another takes its place.

What Year is This? It's SecretSun16

What an interesting year this has been already.

Last year during the New Horizon mission to Pluto (and points beyond), I speculated that the real purpose of this mission was not Pluto at all but was in fact about searching the murky reaches of space beyond the former planet, specifically looking for Planet X.

Sucking in the Seventies

Longtime TV fixture Gary Collins pierced the veil and left this mortal coil at the age of 74.

Everything In Its Right Place

I'm of the opinion that genuine weirdness is usually an intimate affair. And as much as the capital 'S' Skeptics-- many of whom are in fact neurologically wired with various perceptive challenges-- yell and scream and rend their clothing,

Ray Bradbury: Fare Thee Well, Rocket Man

I read a lot of sci-fi in my younger years, but mostly short stories. To me the short story was sci-fi's native form-- present an idea, initiate a conflict, resolve the conflict and see where the idea stands when the dust all settles.

The Fairest of Them All: A True Hollywood Horror Story

Sketch from 1999 Snow pitch

I was watching the revisionist Snow White boomlet (Mirror, Mirror, Snow White and the Huntsman), having a somewhat vested interest in the phenomenon. But as happens so often on this blog, I started looking under rocks on the trail and discovered a deeper story behind the story, something that I will definitely have to look into.

The Avengers, or Jack Kirby Conquers the World

Now do you understand?

I've burned a lot of bandwidth on this blog -- too much, in some people's eyes -- obsessing on Jack Kirby, the visionary madman who unwittingly changed the face of popular culture.

Descendants of Venus: A Secret Sun Picture Story

You know the game: click pix to enlarge and let those neurons fire. Google away until the wee morning hours and connect the dots to this unfolding narrative...

Demand the Unreasonable

The Reason Rally® -- billed as the biggest-ever gathering of atheists, skeptics and so on and so forth--came and went without my reporting on it. I was busy with work and was also in the middle of the Millennium series that I'd been meaning to put up here for several years.

The Eternals: False Flags and Blue Beams

One thing I had failed to realize about The Eternals was that Kirby's depiction of the Deviant invasion of Manhattan wasn't quite the exercise in 50s nostalgia I had originally taken it for.

Nightmares in Camelot, Part 1: The Outer Limits

In my previous post I'd mentioned how the prospect of doing The Outer Limits justice was too much for me at the moment, given my current responsibilities.

Nightmares in Camelot: Sometimes We Can See Them

Perception has been a major part of what I puzzle over on this blog. Specifically, how perception determines reality or at least how we describe reality.

Fringe: Never Surrender

Fringe wrapped up its alt.universe mytharc this past Thursday with an absolute stormer of a conclusion. Cyberspace was glowing with recaps and round tables and hardcore Fringers were left gasping.
