The Holy Fool

The jingling of bells during the dance is meant to frighten evil spirits and the clashing of sticks represent the fight between good and evil.

Talking with Jesse Moynihan, creator of Forming

Forming is one of those webcomix that I'm not sure I'm not hallucinating. it seems to have emerged from my unconscious, or perhaps your unconscious, or yours. Or even you back there.

Three Men and a Smokin' Synchronicity

There's a new book coming out in February with the backbreaking title The Politician: An Insider's Account of John Edwards's Pursuit of the Presidency and the Scandal That Brought Him Down.

The book promises to blow the lid off the John Edwards scandal, something we've not seen too much of lately, but seems to have resurfaced in the wake of the Tiger Woods scandal.

One Step Beyonce

Andre at Alien Project sent me this picture of Beyonce chilling out with Zahi Hawass in Giza at sunset. Zahi must have been in heaven, especially since Beyonce was nice enough to dress as Isis for him.

AstroGnostic: "You're a Nine"

I'm one of those weirdos who likes to listen to director's commentaries on DVDs. I've listened to all of the X-Files commentaries, which usually seem to be focused on the technical aspects of production and not so much the stories, which can be a bit frustrating.

Astronaut Theology: Invasion

I picked up a DVD of Invasion, a 1997 TV miniseries based on the novel, written the same year by Robin Cook. I didn't hold much hope for it- the cast wasn't filled with heavy hitters (Luke Perry, Kim Catrall and Rebecca Gayheart are the leads) and the production values on these sorts of things were rarely cinematic, to put it mildly.

Touched by an Alien

When I began working on my analysis of The X-Files: I Want to Believe, I was a bit hesitant. What I was writing about dealt with abduction phenomenon, something I am resolutely agnostic about, and also something that hasn't had much resonance in the Memestream lately.

Dracula's New World Order

The great Bruce Timm created
his own poster for the film

A secret occult society made of powerful figures from government, industry and the military? Unspeakable rites of blood sacrifice, death and resurrection?

John Cusack, Superstar: Pushing Tin

Well, the full trailer for 2012 is here. And as to be expected from a Roland Emmerich film, it's chock-full of mass destruction and genocide. The guy certainly has a knack for it, doesn't he?

Apocalyptic film seems to have an added appeal during times of malaise like this one- it's the ultimate fantasy of the global reset button. Of course, no one watching pictures themselves amongst the piles of dead the dogs are picking at, they see the blood and fire through the eyes of the stars (John Cusack in this case, re-teamed with Martian Child co-star Amanda Peet) reaching that brand new day on the other side of it- the "Morning After" Maureen McGovern warbled about all those years ago.

Alien Dreaming: I Want to Believe, Part 3

I Want to Believe got pummeled by the Dark Knight blitzkrieg, but I think it also fared poorly because it's too brutally unrelenting in its view of a cold, heartless, spiritually-dead America. It also presents us with heroes beaten down by that reality, which has certainly only become more stark since the film's release.

Masonic Manhattan: Golden Lady

Synchronicity is a funny old thing. I've been knee deep in research this past week for my next book, reading about Cybele and her mind-bogglingly crazy cult. On Friday I had to drag my tired, old, aching carcass into Masonic Manhattan for a documentary interview. The location for the shoot was up in the air, but finally I was called up to the Empire Hotel near Columbus Circle.

The Age of Horus: Hancock, Part III

The original intent of the screenplay that Hancock is based on is that Hancock is Superman. Although the Jason Bateman character was originally named Horus, somewhere along the line he became Ray (Re, Ra).

His character's son was a major character in the original screenplay but was not in the film, since the thrust of the script (no pun intended) became about Ray and Hancock's relationship.

Occult Pop: Rihanna Gets Witchy

Fascinating- not only is Rihanna encased in an illuminated pyramid for this superior rock arrangement of "Umbrella" she's also dressed as Isis. Not the obvious Egyptian version, but the veiled Isis who conquered the Roman Empire.

Weekend Matinee: Isis Unveiled

As a Neo-Jungian auto-didact nutcase, I'm obsessed with the concept of resonance. We're subjected to thousands of ideas and concepts every day, most of which are instantaneously flushed from our consciousness.

The Age of Horus: Hancock, Part 2

Both of Horus' eyes were torn out during a battle with Set

In the first installment of this series we established that Hancock is the literal Horus, now slumming as a superhero. This is entirely consistent with the mythological symbolism, and indeed the word "hero" is derived from "Heru." But are there are other, deeper layers taken from the constellation of Horus symbology encoded into this film?

Yahooccultism: The Oannes Brothers

Did the boys at Yahoo get drunk last night and do MadLibs type semiotics? I literally LOL'd when that little montage popped up on my screen ("Sauron takes young starlet as bride/sacrifice").
