Pray for Us Shimmers

Well, we're coming up on awards season. As of yet, I haven't seen the chilling docudrama Annihilation nominated for any major awards. Maybe it shouldn't have been so closely associated with Netflix or maybe it should have just dropped the "dramatization" bit and done a straight documentary. (Or maybe gone a little lighter on the dubsteb sound effects, I don't know).

However, as a based-on-real-events deal Annihilation is one hell of a lot more realistic than Black Hawk Down or Zero Dark Thirty could dream of ever being. But what good is realism when reality itself is constantly being overwritten?

If you haven't seen it (or don't read the news), Annihilation is a sci-fi (sic) film about an alien intelligence that crash-lands in a Florida swamp and begins turning the joint into a Cocteau Twins record cover  terraforming the landscape and fauna in order to suit its own needs.

Petite Natalie Portman plays an Army veteran (I know, I know; typecasting) who gears up with gang of similarly tiny gal-pals, and ventures into the swamp to try to find out what happened to the Special Forces squad (which includes the Portman character's husband) who disappeared there. This is where the film really strives for cinema verite-type realism. Why do I say that?

Because, as you all know, when a bunch of hardened professional killers go missing somewhere, the go-to strategy for the military is always to find the wispiest waifs they can possibly get their mitts on and drop them into a killing zone to find out what's what.

Sync-fully, the diminutive Ariana Grande (widely rumored to be a Sister in the Clandestine Bene Frasserit, AKA a "Crypto-Frase") managed to play with the film's iconography (and color palate) in her music video for "The Voice of God is a Woman."

According to reports, Grande Bestia said she was too busy to appear in Annihilation herself. Not to burst her adorable little bubble, but I heard rumors that she was a bit too zaftig for the producers. Forget where.

Maybe TMZ.

Of course, the real-life Shimmer isn't quite so photogenic as its Hollywood counterpart; it usually manifests one color at a time, not in snazzy prism effects. Not always, but usually.

As we saw last year in Europe and the UK as well as over the skies of Florida after the hurricanes. So I suppose it's feasible that FLA is the epicenter of the Shimmer contagion, but my own guess would be in the OZ-NZ regions.

Or elsewhere.

"Steve," so named because the Shimmer is actually sentient, may hew a little closer to the Hollywood version, but experts are still trying to hash that out.

We've also seen the Shimmer lighting up the night surf, even if so-called "scientists" (read: "panic-suppression agents") blame the luminescence on "red tides."

The Shimmer also popped up over the Phillippines early in the year, horrifying onlookers.

But who among us wouldn't be horrified if the sky turned into Deep Purple?

This display here was more akin to the Hollywood Shimmer, but as we'll see, the real-life version might have a different color story in mind.

And that's white or albino, as we see here in Nova Scotia.

And our new friend "Shimmy" is not only albino but iridescent like the movie Shimmer.

And apparently not all that rare.

Annihilation doesn't seem to fully commit to the albino motif, but we certainly see prominent examples of it.

But we're seeing a lot more albinism as the real Shimmer continues to spread.

Pretty soon this stuff won't be "rare" at all. It will be quite well-done, actually.

However, the film does give us a gander at these little chums here. The one one the right is particularly scientifically-accurate.

As you see here...

...and here...

...and here...

...and here...

...and here.

In distant-but-related Shims, we see this white giraffe...

...and this white porcupine.

Do note that we saw a similar color-scheme (as well as all the Shimmer you can handle) in the Spanish National Lottery's entrainment propaganda, Danielle.

Not-coincidentally, the same colors are also "Mermaid colors," for some entirely arbitrary reason.

I don't know for sure if Hogweed is Shim-jacent, but it sure as heck sounds like it. Plus, X-Files.

Plus, Day of the Triffids.

Either way, the Shimmer is cooking up all kinds of new critters in the kitchen, including these little hippocampi here.

I just recently realized that seahorses and the Kelpie are symbolically the same, not only from an objective POV but in the overall context of Advanced-Particle Frasics.

No comment here, but do note the rate of spontaneous Shimmerization seems to be increasing.

Plus, LOTR.

The Shimmer also gave us a new Wolf in the Breast...

...and a shimmy Siren from Reticulum.

While on the subject of Pythia, we also have this unsettling story emerging from the SGZ (Shimmer Ground Zero)...

...and Indonesia.

And from the other SGZ, or SGZS ("Shimmer Ground Zero South"), this unsettling development.

And as usual we're seeing all kinds of hellish nightmares being belched forth from the Abyss, like this little dose of nightmare fuel. Check this out: They tried to pass this abomination off as a ray. Can you believe it?

Man, I would not want to be a media and/or science shill in the next few years. I don't care how many people the Cylons deplatform. Imagine trying to foist off that kind of shit with a straight face? I couldn't do it.

Alex Garlands-Evergreen (director of Annihilation) may have been read in on these creatures when he had this mutant alligator pop out of the water. It's hard to say anymore.

But albino alligators have been around for a while, probably due to some advance recon probe the Shimmer folks sent out some time back. There was even a crappy 90s heist flick going by the name, directed by the now-disgraced Kevin "Little" Spacey.

But the Sea-Shimmer is really working over time, even producing a mutant human-like creature.

As well as other disturbing-ass horrors like this...

...and this...

...and these.

On the plus side, we're also seeing some darn cute little fellas swimming around down there, like this day-glo chum.

You see, the Shimmer isn't necessarily evil, it simply has a strong survival instinct. Unlike a sizable chunk of earthlings.

A lot of folks got excited thinking this pic might be of Nessie, but I think we all know better.

That's right; it's just the Scottish Shimmer, probably serving up a fresh Kelpie.

And the Shimmer is also messing with amphibious species, so get used to these kind of headlines too.

Wait; doctors seriously aren't sure how this lung shaped blood clot got coughed up intact?

Just another reason Annihilation should be required viewing at Med schools.

Especially since the Shimsters are programming their hellbeasts with an upsetting new feature...

... and of course that's self-replication.

And it's not just for arthropods...

It looks like the monitor lizard is getting in on the act. Quick; someone phone up William Hurt!

And because there aren't enough horrors already it looks like hammerhead sharks are getting in on the auto-cloning hijinks as well.

Couldn't something cute and fluffy clone itself? What the actual fuck, Shimmer?

I don't know if this is necessarily Shim-jacent, but hippocampi are now reappearing in the new Nile, AKA the River Isis (no, seriously) AKA the Thames.

Found in the waters between Greenwich (home of the Millennium Dome) and the Southbank Centre (home of the Royal Festival hall)? My, whatever could be the connection for these little micro-Kelpies making such an unlikely comeback?

It's a real puzzler, I'll tell you.

Maybe we should ask her.

If you've seen Annihilation then you probably already realize that the "tell" on being possessed by an alien intelligence are-- wait for it-- BFEs.

I guess they ran out of CGI money because those babies aren't even a patch on the real BFEs.

If you have any links or tips as to the Shimmer's progress in 2018, be sure to share it with the class.

  1. Natalie Portman made her on-screen bones at the tender age of 12 or 13 in Leon The Professional when she weighed like 72 pounds. I can't imagine how lethal she must be 25 years later now that she has filled out, relatively speaking.

How many lives has she taken since then? In terms of box-office receipts quite the billions.

    2. Indeed Whiteness IS an anomaly especially when the global population demographics are taken into consideration, this anomaly only increasing as the true overpopulators continue to fail to take responsibility for themselves & the consequence of their breeding, euphemistically fig-leafed by the term "high fertility".

Anomality as sign of danger? According to "Don Lemon" white men are "the biggest terror threat" facing the USA & "There is no white guy ban. So, what do we do about that?". Don's boyfriend's white so quite what he might be signalling here I hesitate to contemplate.

    5. People, for G's sake, albino is not white. Not biologically, not symbolically. There are albino Africans. And even the most Scandinavian of whites aren't entirely free of skin pigments. Mix the two concepts up at your own peril of never understanding a useful thing.

But hey, if it makes you feel clever to be so muddled up that you never notice what smart people are actually talking about, go ahead. Keep thinking that you know something.

    8. Clearly, for those darker skin pigmented types holding such beliefs, albinoism IS a negative (& by association "whiteness" an augury of doom) precisely because It is aberrant*, a mutation, a sign that all is not well amongst them. Hence the notion of "white" devilry ("Yakub's" demon/white "inhumanity", including the ever more popular notion that "whites" supposedly = not being human because they "burn in the sun" etc.)

  3. Chris, I had a feeling you were building up to a shimmery post! I watched Annihilation, honestly just for the CGI and I was not disappointed.

The film presents the concept of refraction to the point of "refracting everything". The "shimmer" sums up today's culture terraforming and is seen in the psychedelic patterns, trippy iridescents, and glimmering metallics of current fashion designers.

Here are just a few "Annihilation" fashion finds:

      The Scottish connection:

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clan_Pringle

"According to the detailed book 'The Records of the Pringles', the surname Hoppringill, or Pringle, dates from the reign of Alexander III of Scotland (1249–86) and is one of the oldest names of the Scottish Border region."

So they are a liminal sort, their crest prominently features an escalop whilst the coat of arms has 3 on display.

"The first syllable is the name Hope, Hopp, Op orUp, derived from the Old Norse Hop - a haven, denoting a small enclosed valley branching off a larger one. The other syllables include ring (or rink ), and hill. As such names are always descriptive, Hoppringill means simply the small enclosed valley of the ring, or round hill." ..."The original seat of the Chief of Clan Pringle was at Hoppringle and later at Torsonce on the Gala Water in Scotland."

A liminal sort that found a haven in which to flourish, akin to the rarity of a pearl finding form in an escalop-like shell?

Turned out to be a horrible experience. The dog freaked out. His wife got sick and was hospitalized ... strange people, dark vibe ... and when they left all was good again. Native Americans reportedly would not settle for very long in that region. Just one example, anon.

    2. @dan: the big odd thing coming out of WV these days (the past couple of years or so) isn't anything paranormal: it's the military helicopters (mainly Chinook cargo carriers, often with Apache gunship escorts) fairly routinely seen in our skies (I guess I should point out that there are no known airbases anywhere near enough to get a Chinook over WV without in-flight refueling; emphasis on *known*), and the number of people spotting soldiers with X Mountain Division shoulder insignia in odd places all around the state.

That and the fact that, last year, the mayor of a major WV city announced that crime was so out of control and the local police budget so short, he was asking the governor to declare a State of Emergency in the city, and to request assistance from the army; not the National Guard, but regular *Army*. And his request was granted.

So now there's at least one mid-sized American city where the police force has been integrated into the US Armed Forces. For instance, pretty much nightly, you can see Army personnel-carrier choppers flying the police on city-wide infrared surveillance flights (it's been ruled not to be a violation of posse comitatus, because even though the military is providing funding, manpower, equipment, logistics, and training, it's still just a city police officer that's peering into houses with an Army IR scope).

What's stranger still is that this hasn't seemed to make the news anywhere but locally. Which leads someone like me to wonder: where else in America is this happening, that hasn't made the news *here*.

Apologies: I realize none of that was really pertinent to the question you asked. But it is the absolute strangest thing happening in WV these days.

      Delete
    3. @RedDirtReport: you're absolutely right: when Europeans first got to the Americas, there were already people living pretty much everywhere they went (even Death Valley had a seasonal native population)...except today's WV (minus the panhandles). The last native pre-Columbian population we had was the Moundbuilders, who covered the state in earthworks and standing stones that, strangely, no one seems to want to study (and who seem to have been the only native people to have had iron metallurgy), before they vanished sometime between 1000BC and 1000AD (and when the historians can't agree on a date to within a millennium, I'd suggest they don't understand it as well as they think).

Your friend's experience really doesn't surprise me. When I lived out on the Plains, I met any number of Midwesterners who had vacationed in WV. Most would say that they'd never met nicer people...but a certain percentage would say "except..." and follow it with a story about taking a wrong turn at dusk, and finding themselves up a holler where a large group of unfriendly people where gathered for some reason that was never made clear, and who just told them to get back in their car and drive back the way they'd came; or of finding themselves in a town that didn't seem to match up with anything on the map, and that had such a strange vibe that they decided to drive on, and spend the night sleeping in their car at an Interstate rest stop.

Having grown up in WV, and collected folklore for a couple decades, all I can say is that, in Appalachia, High Strangeness is so common it becomes part of daily life.

As to strange people, it occurs to me that one of the effects of some EMF is paranoia, so i wonder if in some cases if the people were normal, but the effects of the EMF made them seem otherwise. It's possible that some people are not as sensitive to EMF which is why they can live there. Alternately, the effect of the EMF might be the reason they are strange.

    6. @Khadir: It's good to have a local perspective. Not exactly what i meant but interesting nonetheless, and perhaps not completely unrelated. Maybe there is a less conventional reason for their presence..

There could be a Rockefeller connection as well. I know that David's nephew is a congressman from there.

As to the military/police issue, i'm not that surprised. The Republic is long dead, such as it was. What city is that anyway? If there are local reports on it, perchance the local paper has an online presence? I'd be interested to see.

      Delete
    7. @dan: a less conventional reason for the unacknowledged military presence in WV? It honestly wouldn't surprise me. No mistake: I still hold that the most likely explanation is that one faction of the Deep State is retrenching against some other faction of the Deep State. But there's a murky (yet vital) point where Deep Politics, the "paranormal", folklore, religion, and science all meet. So if it was announced tomorrow that the military had just concluded a mutual defense treaty with the Little People who live under the mountains, I wouldn't blink.

The city I was referring to is Huntington, which is on the south shore of the Ohio River, very near the border with Kentucky. The main Huntington newspaper is the Herald-Dispatch, and the most-watched TV station is an NBC affiliate, WSAZ.

Here's where the story takes a turn. I did a quick search this morning, and the handful of stories I could find all report the Governor calling out the National Guard to pilot the surveillance choppers and drive the armored personnel carriers the city cops now sometimes use to serve warrants on the bad side of town; even though everyone I've talked to about it pretty clearly remembers it being reported as regular Army at the time (it caused quite the tempest in the teapot locally, as you can imagine; though at least as many folks thought it was the greatest idea ever than were uneasy at a de facto military occupation of their city). I'm going to chalk this up to a bunch of people misremembering the same thing the same way; because the alternative- that we're remembering the story correctly, but the original narrative has been memory-holed and replaced with something more palatable- really is pretty paranoid, even for a man like me.

Anyway: good luck, and happy researching!

      Delete
    8. @Khadir: I always give precedence to the conventional theories but never rule out the unconventional ones until i have something solid (preferably literally.) That is why i mentioned Rockefeller. I find it highly likely to be a Deep State faction's operations in this cold civil war, but rule nothing out.

As to the potential memory holing, that is not too implausible. In 1984 they had to physically replace problematic writings. That is now unnecessary, since everything is digital. It would not be that hard to memory hole something now. There is The Wayback Machine but not everything is saved. And there are fewer and fewer people who challenge the official narrative who are also of a questioning scholarly mind to hunt such things down. As to the physical papers that may exist, how many people keep them? Any copies in libraries could probably be disappeared if necessary, but i doubt that it is anymore. Who would go and check anymore? If someone did, who would believe them? Mostly nobodies. You don't get to be a somebody, particularly in this day and age, without towing the official line. Even if you know better, it is true, that if you tell a lie often enough it becomes the truth.

Then there is the Mendela Effect, which i think is overused as an explanation (it may just be the natural flaws in human memory and cognition), but which i think has some merit as an actual phenomena. A truly sane person may doubt their own memory, when in fact reality may be insane.

      Delete
    9. @dan: I've got to agree with you concerning the Mandela effect: it's a very real thing, but it's also massively overused as explanation. And I have to wonder if some part of that overuse might not be deliberately seeded by the archons (some part of it, of course, just being the natural human impulse to jump on the latest bandwagon, especially if it makes one look "special" in some way): after all, if enough people yell "Mandela Effect" every time they misremember something, the average person is a lot less likely to take the concept seriously.

The Mandela Effect is something I've been studying since 1997, way before I knew there was a name for it. What made me aware of it then was my father's death, which I recall as occurring as on April 12; it's an easy date for me to remember, since it was the day after his birthday, I was there at his bedside...and I have documents that list his date of death as April 12. But my brother remembers it as being April 15; an easy date for him to remember, since he was high in corporate management at the time, had an important conference scheduled to start the morning of the 15th, and lost his job because I called him shortly after midnight with the news, and he had to cancel the conference on such short notice...and he likewise has documents listing dad's death date as April 15.

I consider that the gold standard for the Mandela Effect: two very specific narratives, with multiple sources of documentation for both. Of course, that's pretty rare. I've found that this works pretty well as a touchstone: when the minority narrative is something no one would deliberately lie about, is *very* detail-specific, and where there's only one minority narrative around. (That's the reason I'm sceptical of what's arguably the most-discussed example of the Mandela Effect: the pronunciation of the "Berenstain Bears". It's true that a lot of people remember that the name used to be different; but there's no consensus what the former pronunciation was.)

I've said for a while that Reality is a simply a poor liar who can't keep her story straight. (I could go on at truly excruciating length about what I think is behind the Mandela Effect; but I'd probably best start my own blog if I'm going to do that!)

      As always: happy researching!

    10. Interesting Khadir. I have had potential experience with the phenomena, but nothing so concrete. I mentioned to my cousin a death that i swear there was discussion about, but was quite surprised when years later i found out they were alive. Actually it happened twice. I had not heard of it until my cousin told me about after i mentioned this. I considered the possibility of psychological ops as part of something like mkultra, but if other people's experience with Mendela is true, i wonder how that could be possible since a disparate group of people would have had the same experience, with no record of it. It seems like it is another part of the realm of High Strangeness, and like many other things of that nature, my view is that i just do not know..

      Delete
    11. @dan: I just wanted to take a second and applaud your last sentence! More people researching these topics need to be able to say "I just don't know."

I know from personal experience how difficult that can be (especially when one first starts to seriously investigate High Strangeness). So I just want to give you two thumbs, way up!

      Delete
    12. @Khadir: I think that is the proper position to take when researching anything, moreso perhaps with High Strangeness. I forget who said this, but the greatest impediment to learning anything is falsely believing you know something (I know Goethe said something similar about freedom, so maybe i conflated a few quotes since i cant find a source. Frank Herbert comes to mind too, but i digress.)

  6. Hey Chris I said this before but this post contains serious evidence supporting what I was saying before and I'll repeat in case its been missed/forgotten.

So the premise for the Purple, Pearlple, Shimmer thing is Yesod which is associated with the Moon [in the G.D. esque system they are following]. The metal to be extracted is SILVER.

This is what Silver Ore looks like:

    https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0OjDkaDkUZ4/maxresdefault.jpg

    https://img1.exportersindia.com/product_images/bc-full/dir_44/1314623/silver-ore-2151427.jpg

i.e. its Pearlescent/Shimmery. So in any films that are trying to ''extract'' the metal from the ore, we expect to see Shimmer and some kind of silvery extrusion - I haven't watched Venom yet but that has the black oily shimmer we discussed so there should be some extraction at some point.

In ''God is a Woman'' you see in the first shot Ariana is standing in a swirl of Shimmer wearing silver boots. It then cuts between the image you've used here (which looks like the run-off from some extraction process as well) to grey-white shots. If you want it anymore blatant Ariana is then heated up (in the candle) and then leaves wearing a silvery dress. The triple dog thing is prob. a reference to some Triple Goddess Lunar thing. There is then a group of people all wearing blue-lit silver clothes. She is carrying the balloon planets indicating that they are above her and therefore she is the Moon [the closest to the Earth, represented by the fields, in the Chaldean Order]. The scenes that use Gold and Light will be to do with the Moon's purpose as reflected light, as opposed to direct light. Again its all pretty blatant. So Wow.

The creature that is Poppy was doing something similar with colours pink, purple, silver.

Remember, the Purple was the move on from Orange which is the colour of Hod and is associated with Mercury. I gave examples of the extraction of Mercury (Quicksilver) from our Global Orangethon, some being very blatant like Tom Cruise's The Mummy, and some being more subtle like Stranger Things 2.

I would imagine the '' white things '' that are coming out the Shimmer are extrusions of the metal they are used to show that the ''alchemical'' process has worked. You should check out ''White Silver'', just like there is White Gold. I need to watch the end again to check out more details for the doppelganger.

Anyway this seems to be just more evidence for the overarching theory and means we can definitely get ahead for 2019. For instance we have been talking about how it will work its way through the colours of Malkuth (citrine, olive, russet, ''black'') opening with ''yellow'' and what do we get ''Bumblebee''

    Thanks Chris!

You can watch this youtube clip and it will show the process you will see the purple, the shimmer and the resultant metal bar. If you're short on time skip to 3.35.

After watching that its worth watching the God is a Woman video again to see what I mean:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHLHSlExFis

Its worth noting that when found in nature silver is often found mixed with gold, lead, copper etc so needs to go through extraction processes. When she appears in the ''Gold'' bit of the video the accompanying lyrics are:

''I can be all the things you told me not to be''

Silver has to go through further refinement to separate it from these other metals. The bizarre gopher bit with purple flowers or whatever they are (sorry not American) is probably signalling us that the ''digging'' is involved to get this purple ''ore''.

I've got to run but I'll try and create a visual aid for the whole theory tomorrow so it makes seeing how this all fits together a bit easier especially with the Orange and backtracking the colours it through the previous years. I also have some more information on the purpose of the ''de-initiation'' ritual from some allies.

P.s. If you don't know it already look up the role of Mercury in the alchemical extraction of gold etc!

    2. Thank u Blogos, I apprecitat many parts of your analysis, my phone us a mess or I would say more, but the extraction/metals to ores is exactly right (with the science of what i have been concluding, as well). The fact that ritual factors into all this is fascinating. And yet scary. My only addition at this point is that I think 'metal' definition - the ratios of solid to semisolid (gel), to gas, etc (dust and gas cloud particle size)...*they* are getting ahead on these technicalities. Cheating the scales. Fwiw. Tracy.

"Pearlite is a two-phased, lamellar (or layered) structure composed of alternating layers of ferrite (88 wt%) and cementite (12 wt%) that occurs in some steels and cast irons. During slow cooling of an iron-carbon alloy, pearlite forms by a eutectoid reaction as austenite cools below 727 °C (1,341 °F) (the eutectoid temperature). Pearlite is a microstructure occurring in many common grades of steels."

    5. Here is the link to the overarching theory with visual aids. I included some speculation on the metal theory as descriptions with some of the pictures.

      https://hermeticlessons.blogspot.com/2018/12/secret-sun-unifying-colour-theory.html

Regarding God is a Woman - the Tarot card for the World is important. The God who is a Woman is Luna (Hekate, Diana, Artemis) she is frequently pictured sitting on the Earth which makes her head the Moon. We've talked about the shimmer already so I'll skip that.

The video goes to a very lunar coloured chamber.

The first ''I can be all the things you told me not to be'' is blue and I think that could be a reference to silver poisoning which turns you blue. The necklace is silver though.

The triple headed dog is a reference to Cereberus and makes Ariana Hekate, maybe Persephone.

Then comes the heating of the ''ore'' in the candle.

If you notice when we come back to the Shimmer pool you will see a laurel leaf floating. This is a reference to the World Card from the Tarot where Diana is shown surrounded by laurels. It's classily done here but fundamentally still painting by numbers.

Then we see the Prairie Dogs (???) again this kind of has to imply digging for the metal (with the purple flowers) otherwise what the fuck?

Then she ''flows'' out of the ore in a silvery dress and becomes pregnant, more Luna symbolism. Then she is the divine Shewolf or something. Then she is shown amongst the planets in a triangle looking more in gold than silver. This is another moment where the lyrics go ''I could be all the things you told me not to be''

Then we get to kitten with hammer. The hammer could be the processes needed to beat the metal pure. The cat...? well I think we are going to towards beta kitten or lyran aliens here. Then you see the letter ''M'' appear in her open legs. I've talked about the balloon planets and fields already.

The end though... - the lighthouse from Annihilation. You will see the light?

    1) Annihilation and the Shimmer were quite clearly based upon HPL's "The Color Out of Space", a modernized rip-off, really, and:

    2) In HPL's grand guignol masterpiece "The Dunwich Horror", when the indescribable, formless cosmic WTF took a hold of human flesh, it found a deformed ALBINO virgin to be its most perfect vessel, and poor little Lavinia's child (not the one who could pass off as human, the OTHER one) was also described as albino (the half-human face on it, at least).

The Lighthouse seems linked to The Dark Tower story. The Annilihation Author changed the geographic location, since the real location was already associated with another book/film series. It could be an actual documentary from the viewpoint of agents sent to investigate and find the "the X".It is obvious very few people know the original story. The time frame of the original events triggering an investigation by military intel,a book trilogy and then movie in a 18 year time span does seems plausible.

What had been earth and air and later corn, and later still bread, really was in them. We of course who live on a standardized international diet…are artificial beings and have no connection (save in sentiment) with any place on earth. We are synthetic men, uprooted. The strength of the hills is not ours.”

  17. Wow! Amazing to get it all in one sitting like that after being bombarded, day after day, by the Shimmer mutants. Seriously, albino creatures seem to be reported on daily. And one other thing; the Deep Purple reference reminded me of something ... I was at my babysitter's house aged two or three and she had a Deep Purple band poster on her wall. I recall staring at it. Stuck with me for some reason. This was around the time of "Smoke on the Water," the band's international hit, inspired by a fire at the Montreux casino (during a Frank Zappa show) caused by some clown with a flare gun. The smoke the band saw was wafting from the burning casino over Lake Geneva in Switzerland - not too terribly far away from the current location of the CERN complex. More on that in an upcoming Dust Devil Dreams post.

  18. Oh, and one artist who fits well here at the Secret Sun is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. His 2013 song "Mermaids" is worth checking out ("I believe in God / I believe in mermaids too"). Cave is sort of a man who discovered something ancient and is trying to articulate that "thing" through his song lyrics. Just an impression I have.

Nick was working on the script for 'The Crow' re-boot before his son died, too.
I snapped a few photos of the crows on the Riverstage roof when the support bands were on and the sun was still lighting the sky and as the flying foxes (bats) started filling the sky.
It certainly was atmospheric that summer night next to the Brisbane River -

Sharp Objects opens with Camille Preaker being sent down from St. Louis to her hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to write a story on the disappearance of a young girl and to maybe see if she can connect it to the murder of another one the year before. By the end of the first episode, Nicole Keene, the missing girl, turns up dead in the same manner as the first. But are there any suspects, other than one little boy claiming he saw "The Woman In White"? Who is The Woman In White on Sharp Objects? Why is this a story everyone is discounting?

  22. "Sound Opinions," an NPR show out of Chicago, just released their Christmas special featuring quirky music a collector has found. Features a track the U.S. Air Force released as a promotional record in 1968, "Shepherds and Wisemen." The collector notes how curious it is that it doesn't seem much to promote the military or the war effort...

But it's the Air Force in 1968 producing a song about shepherds and the light of a star shining down for centuries. To make way for wise men. And the bit about free drinks and children feels a bit MK-y.

The lyrics as I can understand them with just a couple of tries:

    "Shepherds, Wisemen
    Starlight shining brightly
Flickering down through centuries of time and now...

    "Let's become like shepherds again
Let's make room for wise men
Let's take time to look for a star
    That's not forgotten

"Free drinks; Christmas is for children
Tinsel (love?); glimmering (gold leaf? coldly?)
Wandering back the centuries of hate but now...

    "Let's become like shepherds again
Let's make room for wise men
Let's take time to look for a star
    That's not forgotten

    "Doo doo...

"Peace at Christmas; Wouldn't that be awfully nice?
    Let's become like shepherds again
Let's make room for wise men
Let's take time to look for a star
    ...repeat...
    That's not forgotten"

    Hail Vega?

The relevant conversation starts at 22:07 and the song at 26:38.

    https://www.soundopinions.org/show/681

And, as a personal sync, I recently heard some esoteric groups make a big deal about the shepherds and wise men being different paths of spiritual development. Curious if the lyricist shared such a perspective?

    Cheers

"Immanuel God was with Me and I felt whole and complete in Him. It was a like a home-coming because I had been here before. I knew things without being told. For example, God was standing next to me with a crown made of lapis lazuli and pearls. I knew the crown was light although the pearls and lapis lazuli were heavy stones. He also had a white cloak for me in His hands. The white cloak was like a tunic. It was embroidered with many pearls of different sizes on the front part of the cloak. There was also another under-cloak for me in His other hand. The color of my cloak was a different mixture between purple and burgundy and was embroidered with very small gemstones. We don’t have that specific color on earth. "

  40. I like the movie "Annihilation"; and found some review comments that were interesting:

    http://www.back-row.com/home/2018/2/28/alex-garland-annihilation-review

""Annihilation" is largely a …riff on the idea of a zone that refracts not only light but quite literally the fabric of our planet. Animals and plants of different species end up spliced together, also enveloping the DNA and attributes of any human who comes in contact with them. There's also a lot of parallel symbolism about creation in the manifestation of this zone…
But it also touches upon the more human concept of flaws. As they state in the movie itself, the problem with assembling a suicide mission is that your team will most likely be made up of people who have a death wish. Whether you start out with physical or mental scars, the shimmer seems to specifically exacerbate these weaknesses, and eventually every character in Lena's team succumbs to some morphed version of their original flaws.
The 'annihilation' … turns out to simply be the pointlessness of our concept of individuality. There is no meaning to our existence, we’re just a series of pre-programed biological functions, no different from the breathing and growing shimmer itself. You can either define your life through a series of roadblocks to distract yourself from the inevitable, or you can accept death and the cold terror of pointless existence." There's a nice Lovecraftian sentiment...
"Yet, that doesn't mean you can't appreciate joy and love. ….. another intriguing thread …opens up the possibility that a human-shimmer hybrid may be a more perfect being."

Brings to mind a concept found in many science fiction works over the years: if we had to philosophically or biologically defend ourselves against an ET influence that might otherwise conquer, alter, or replace us--could we? How many people would want to fight that fight in the modern day? In the culture of the 1950s and 1960s that (fictional) fight would have been taken on; Heinlein's "Puppet Masters" comes to mind; but are we in that culture/world anymore?

Leading to a reflection on the lyrics to "Cocteau Twins" by the Scottish band Simple Minds; lyrics that seem to dovetail with some of the "Annihilation" movie's ideas:

I see them walking ---You know they're walking at night
Ohh in the dark you know ---They're shining out so bright
Your sarky voices are gonna come on so near--As every picture becomes so clear
You--You come on so sharp--Yet be so nice
Tell me that you're so hot--But you're as cold as ice
There is no cure--You're so blind can't you see?
There is no cure--Can't buy no immunity
There is no cure--So keep your evil from me
There is no cure--They like to stay
Ooh come on--Come on and stay up so late

  41. the puppet masters adapted Heinlein for the movies back in '94 not even bothering to misdirect the audience with a renaming, the tagline of "The Puppet Masters"? "Trust No One".

The invasion is done & dusted & Humanity's final defeat rushes towards It's conclusion as celebrated by the sheer overload of pop-cultural output (the amount of stuff being made, even before taking into account non-Hollywood etc stuff is mind-boggling). "Annihilation" is but one facet of the shimmer (with all It's attendant mutations & corruptions) the Humann vestige is subject to.

  42. Man, these posts just cause me to wax rhapsodical, apologies!
Sometimes I wonder if the Earth is a shimmering doorway into all possible futures... This place is bubble-film thin and iridescent, the colours shift and swirl, mostly we just don't notice the patterns we make.
Existing as we do at the melting edge of possibility: we're all dining in the Restaurant at the End of the Universe (or the beginning), where the food talks back and and new dishes are served at the speed of light... Who do you want to eat, or be eaten by? Are you even hungry anymore? Maybe we should just enjoy the conversation!
How much more do we need to learn from fear and pain? Right now perhaps we're only just truly feeling the lessons, like punches to the the flabby gut, one after another, sending ripples.

If there is an apocalypse (this time), it's elongated, particalised. There's no need for things to always stay the same, stuck on repeat, sooner or later the wave has to break, unless it doesn't. Then Surfs up. Go break yourself.

  43. Hmm ...
"It’s an arresting, boldly alienating screen performance that destabilizes the movie even as it brings it together.
“Vox Lux, which bears the subtitle “A Twenty-First Century Portrait,” is divided into two acts set 17 years apart; we don’t even meet Portman’s version of Celeste until the second half.
This rupture proves entirely fitting for a character whose identity has been shattered by tragedy, one that strikes early and casts a ghastly pall over the entire picture.

The calm of a chilly morning is broken by gunshots at a Staten Island high school, where Celeste (an excellent Raffey Cassidy), a quiet, wide-eyed teenager, gently tries to talk an armed gunman out of his rampage.
Her efforts are in vain, but the fates are clearly listening: Celeste survives the carnage and goes on to sing a song of mourning — one of several tunes expertly written for the movie by Sia — at a memorial service, backed on the piano by her older sister, Eleanor (Stacy Martin).
Her gorgeous, quavering solo is picked up by TV cameras and beamed out to a world desperately seeking hope and redemption."
