I burned a lot of bandwidth in the early days of The Secret Sun talking about comics legend Jack Kirby. Some folks dismissed it as fanboy indulgence, until Kirby's delirious psychedelic visions of modern-day gods, angels and demons conquered Hollywood and defined pop culture for an entire decade.
Kirby died thirty years ago last month, just as the overheated, post-Batman comic book market began to crash. We'll be looking at his legacy as his heroes ascend to Valhalla and as the superhero genre finally collapses and leaves the world stage forever.
Kirby's life and work is one great, big game of Secret Sun Scrabble and this presentation hits all the bases. Kirby saw the cold new world that was coming more than most, and tried to warn us of manmade horrors beyond our worst imaginings the only way he knew how.
