Lucifer's Technologies, Revisited: The Missing Puzzle Piece

Of all the essays I've posted in the past 15 years on The Secret Sun, the "Lucifer's Technologies" series is far and away the one I get the most requests to republish.

The problem is that it was all written during an intense and feverish manic rush, a mad blaze of inspiration, and therefore isn't really the most coherent work I've ever done. I've started and stopped work on expanding it into a larger, more structured text a number of times, but there was always something missing, something I hadn't quite put my finger on.

I think that certain something was part of the thesis Carl Raschke put forth in his 1982 paper, "Ultraterrestrial Agents of Cultural Deconstruction." That held the unconscious conclusion I was working towards, but I was on too much of an informational sugar high to stick the landing.

I also can approach the material with the added wisdom of five additional years of this world increasingly slouching towards a dismal, dystopian techno-authoritarianism. There's a desperate --  I would say frantic, even terrified -- push on the part of the new establishment to exert China-styled totalitarian control through high-tech schemes that all look hopelessly doomed to ultimate failure by the objective observer.

Virtual Reality still hasn't overcome VR sickness, smart cities are not a micron closer to existing than they were five years ago and the Internet of Things is every hacker's wet dream. Worse still, the great age of technological and scientific discovery has long since past, no matter how much grifters, rubes, dupes and shills shriek to the contrary.

And so the push for a Techno-Feudalist revolution is not only guaranteed to fail catastrophically, it could also destroy human civilization on the whole.

And maybe that's the idea.

So how did we all come to be so brainwashed by this ridiculous and childish fantasy of never-ending innovation? Ultimately because an explosion of technology and science following the Second World War instilled wildly-delusional expectations, delusions deliberately reinforced by Hollywood and our pop-science gutter press.

So what happened after World War II to ignite the techno-explosion?

Well, it was primarily the invention of the solid-state transistor, a modern miracle some prominent physicists once dismissed as an impossibility. That momentous event came six months after the dawn of the UFO Age, when Kenneth Arnold spotted what he described as fast-moving objects skipping like plates across water. That immediately inspired the term "flying saucers."

That was soon followed by the reported downing of a flying saucer in Corona, New Mexico-- yes, Corona -- that was soon explained as the downing of a Mogul high-altitude balloon during an electrical storm. Some thirty years later that event would enter the public lexicon as Roswell, named after the Army Air Base where the debris from the object was taken.

An entire industry would pop up around the purported cover-up of the crash retrieval, and several writers would later put forth the thesis that all this technology we have today was back-engineered from the recovered flying saucer.

It all sounds pretty absurd, especially when you realize stories of crashed objects filled with technologically-advanced beings who teach mankind their skills go back thousands of years. It indeed sounds totally ridiculous until you look at what followed in the wake of the alleged "crash at Roswell."

So basically we had a relative flatline (with a few hills and dales) of technological progress over the past ten thousand years and then a 90ยบ vertical incline after Roswell. Of course, some of the "great innovations" these charts show are at best trivial and ephemeral and at worst highly questionable, but you get the basic idea.

So let's say for the sake of argument that these stunning breakthroughs were in fact inspired by someone or something else, and that someone or something else wasn't Reticulan Greys. What else might it be?

Here's where Raschke comes in:

"I substitute the prefix ultra- where one would expect extra-, so as to stress that the phenomena in question may be not only from beyond the Earth, but from outside the very matrix of space, time and matter. Such a surmise is not as outlandish as it may seem on first consideration, since many theoretical physicists today have acceded to the notion that everything that falls within the range of normal, empirical science may be only a thin strand of intelligibility interwoven with hidden alternative folds of reality.

The spatiotemporal order, whose geometry was formulated summarily by Einstein, may be little more than than a single vibrational "rate" within what John Wheeler has called "superspace." Thus UFO "visitations" or intrusions may be traced back to some hyperdimensional point of origin.

Furthermore, the "visitors," rather than systematically "studying" our ways out of magisterial curiosity, may be working with methodical dispatch to make us transparently conscious of, if not to elevate us toward, the realm in which they move and have their being."

From Cyberbiological Studies of the Imaginal Component in the UFO Contact Experience by Carl Raschke, (Archaeus, Vol.5, 1989)

As we saw in Lucifer's Technologies, Dr. Raschke was by no means the only guy with credentials out the yingyang who held these unusual opinions:
"Suppose we are actually living in a multi-dimensional time track with the same space, including a young primeval world, our own and a much older world with advanced technology, all ageing and developing side by side, conscious and sometimes stirred by the presence of the others - strange ships in the sky, images of ancient creatures, the imprudent antics of poltergeists and strange noises like the creaking of bedsprings from an empty room.
"These time tracks spin around like separate grooves of a gramophone record, each playing a different score until given a sudden jolt when the needle jumps a track, imposing for a very short period an unintelligible tune upon its neighbour before being returned to its own groove again."
 - Wing Commander Sir Peter Horsley, former Equerry to Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip

Many prominent UFOlogists were in rough agreement:

"There seems to be no evidence yet that any of these craft or beings
originate from outer space."
- Gordon Creighton, Official 1992 Flying
Saucer Review Policy Statement
"UFO behaviour is more akin to magic than to physics as we know it...
the modern UFOnauts and the demons of past days are probably
 identical."

- Dr. Pierre Guerin, Flying Saucer Review
"Studies of flying saucer cults repeatedly show that they are part of a
larger occult social world."
- Stupple + McNeece, 1979 MUFON UFO
Symposium Proceedings

"The symbolic display seen by the abductees is identical to the type of
initiation ritual or astral voyage that is imbedded in the traditions of every culture...the structure of abduction stories is
identical to that of occult initiation rituals...the UFO beings of
today
belong to the same class of manifestation as the entities that
were described in centuries past."
 - Dr. Jacques Vallee, Confrontations

I feel duty-bound to remind you all of this as well, from a previous post:

(The) guy who got me started on all this Synchromysticism stuff 25 years ago told me he believed it was ultimately the work of entities that exist outside of our concept of reality, and can manipulate events in our own dimension like a child plays with blocks.

This guy was as good at this stuff as anyone has ever been, had legit scientific credentials (chemical engineering), and was utterly convinced of this. And to tell you the truth, I think it drove him insane.

DECONSTRUCTION TIME AGAIN

So if these entities inspired or bestowed our technology, what were they after? What goal were they working towards by giving we idiotic meat-monkeys a book of metaphorical matches?

Raschke again:

UFOs serve as facilitators of what I label "cultural deconstruction,"... "Deconstruction" is contrasted with "destruction" inasmuch as the latter connotes a random and unconstrained act of demolition, whereas the former suggests an aim-governed and formative sequence of changes...

The work of deconstruction is not sudden, but slow and inexorable. It is more akin to a sculptor chipping away at stone so that he can craft a figure than to an iconoclast who seeks by some coup de main to obliterate outworn impressions.

So far as UFOs are concerned, the deconstructive movement works upon human culture as a whole, although it may also have devastating effects at times on individual lives.

Let's have a look at a few of those devastating effects then:

The Trickster and the Paranormal author George Hansen thinks along the same lines as Raschke:

The supernatural, the paranormal, psi/psychic phenomena and UFOs are all associated with processes of destructuring. For the purposes of his argument, ghosts, Bigfoot, etc. are considered as categories of the paranormal. Animal mutilations and crop circles fall under the UFO rubric.
The qualities of destructuring include: change, transition, disorder, marginality, the ephemeral and the blurring of boundaries.

DECONSTRUCT THEN RECONSTRUCT

But maybe the plan isn't just to reduce humanity back to savagery. Maybe the Ultraterrestrials have something else in store for us. As I wrote in Lucifer's Technologies:

(T)here was a darker undercurrent to the Contactee message; most of them were pitching some kind of cosmic authoritarianism with their delusional accounts of flying saucer joyrides. This impulse would have a major impact on the nascent New Age movement.

The best-known Contactee, George Adamski, preached a message of cosmic Communism:

Adamski was considered to be an outrageous subversive, and is alleged to have said that the alien form of government was very different from the democracy of the United States and was most probably a Communist system. Adamski also predicted that Russia would dominate the world, which would usher in a 1,000-year era of peace on Earth.

Writing in reference to George Adamski's intelligence handler Anglo-Irish aristocrat, RAF fighter pilot, screenwriter and electronic music pioneer Desmond Leslie, from the same essay:

Leslie would come to associate with another of the "George" Contactees, in this case George King, the British-based head of the UFO cult, the Aetherius Society. Like many UFO cultists, King would simply polish up old Theosophical hoodoo with the Space Age sheen of the Saucers.

King was much like Adamski in many ways (Leslie would later introduce the two men) but also prophesied a troubling scenario in which an unnamed figure, a "Globe Master, a ruler of the world, is to come - a stranger who will
be
more powerful than all the armies on earth."

According to King, this "Globe Master" will remove all those
from the earth who do not respect his word." Note the capitalized pronouns:

...He will openly approach the Earth leaders; He will make His origin known to them but they will not believe Him. However, He will have great powers which by Karmic Law, He will be allowed to use in order to demonstrate to all men beyond all doubt, the Authority empowering Him to carry out His great mission on Earth...the power of this Being will be greater than mankind has ever seen before in any single humanoid frame. So vast will it be as to be almost terrible...

Many occult and esoteric groups and figures have embraced Globalism, for centuries in fact, if not openly advocated for totalitarian systems like Fascism or Communism. The alien groups only more so.

“A great many of the contactees purvey philosophies which are tinged, if not tainted, with totalitarian overtones.”
-Paris Flammonde, The Age of Flying Saucers

UFO literature from the 50s to the 80s in particular is rife with this kind of propaganda, often accompanied by warnings of nuclear armageddon or environmental catastrophe if humans don't obey their Space Brothers' commands:

"The Space Beings appear definitely concerned with seeing that all humankind is united as ‘one’ on this planet.

“Contactees have been told that the Space Beings hope to guide Earth to a period of great unification, when all races will shun discriminatory separations and all of humankind will recognize its responsibility to every other life form existing on the planet. The Space Beings also seek to bring about a single, solidified government...”
-Brad Steiger, The Fellowship

Jacques Vallee wrote about some of the troubling aspects of UFO cultism in Messengers of Deception (1979), including:

Fantastic economic theories, including the belief that a “world economy” can be created overnight, and that democracy should be abolished in favor of utopian systems, usually dictatorial in their outlook.

As you can see, this is a very, very big story. Quite possibly the story of our times. More disturbingly, the story of our future. It's a story I'm finding myself getting pulled back into, along with the hundred or so other projects on my plate.

But this one is especially important because I feel very strongly that there are other forces at work, including a new and unknowable presence that seems independent of, if not actively in opposition to, this agenda. I haven't been able to even begin to wrap my head around that concept, but maybe diving back into these deep, cold Stygian waters will help me along in that process.
