I’ve never placed him in my personal pantheon of filmmakers, even though I’ve seen most of his films, and a few of them had a big impact on my young psyche.
By that, I mean Halloween was the most terrifying experience I had at the movies outside of Invasion of the Body Snatchers. I saw The Thing where it was meant to be seen—at the drive-ins—and of course, They Live is evergreen.
I’m looking at his filmography as I type: Dark Star was a lot of fun, but I can’t remember if I saw Assault on Precinct 13 on account of being old as dirt. I know I saw The Fog, but remember next to nothing about it.
I liked Escape from New York OK, but not as much as others do. I quite like Starman (which I have on DVD) and Big Trouble in Little China (which I don’t).

I also like In the Mouth of Madness, though I feel like it could have been a lot better than it is. Village of the Damned was pretty OK, even though it gets a bad rap.
I didn’t much care for Escape from LA, and I wish I had liked Ghosts of Mars, which had a fascinating premise but was a pretty lousy film.
And since there were so many pictures like it at the time, Vampires totally flew under my radar, though it might be worth a watch next time I’m missing the late 90s.

I saw it ages ago and didn’t remember much of it. But we watched it the other night, and boy, was I hooked like a fish.
So hooked that I’m thinking the picture might well belong in the Secret Cinema Hall of Fame, along with Jacob’s Ladder, Blade Runner, Mulholland Dr., and all the rest of the trauma narratives I find so oddly emotionally regulating...
