Here's how it goes...
In this series, we’ve been tracing the steps backward from John Milton’s Paradise Lost, and seeing how his Lucifer seems to be a veiled stand-in for the scandalous Giordano Bruno.
But Milton’s tableau of Lucifer bringing back legions of old gods to wage war on the angels of Heaven seems to tap into something far deeper and far older than the Nolan: and that’s the strangely common myth of a race of older gods who looked more kindly on humanity than the new gods who cast their forerunners down and imprisoned them, either under the earth or the oceans.
This story was told in Greece (the Titans), and then amongst the Jewish diaspora (the Watchers), and before them both in Mesopotamia (the Anunaki). Is this a case of simple cultural diffusion, or is there something deeper - and stranger - at work here?
And how exactly did “Lucifer” — a title used for Jesus Christ in the early Church’s liturgy and the Book of Revelation, as well as several saints and luminaries — come to be identified with Satan, despite having no legitimate basis in Scripture? It really doesn’t make much sense on the face of it.
Well, there’s one particular Titan that may crack that mystery, so let’s get back to business...
