Because all of them seem to repeat the same tired old theories and anachronistic rumors that had put me off doing a real Secret Sun deep-dive into the film for the past 27 years now.
Indeed, all they left me wondering was did the world really need yet another dull-as-dishwater Eyes Wide Shut wild-goose chase?
Yet people seem to sense - rightly and reasonably - there's something about this film eluding their grasp, but far too many choose to grasp at straws instead.
Yet very few of the self-appointed experts out there even seem to be aware that the film is closely based on a novel, one released 100 years ago this year. And none of them seem to understand that there's really not much point in trying to hunt for hidden occult symbolism in a film whose entire centerpiece is an explicit occult ritual.
In fact, it's the novel - and three films predating Eyes Wide Shut adapting it - that provides the ultimate key to breaking Kubrick's code. But not in the way some might think, and certainly not in the way I was expecting.
It wasn't until I realized who the "Ziegler" character is - a character that isn't in the novel or the other adaptions - that I had that "eureka" moment, and knew the code had finally been cracked.
My original plan was to simply "teach the controversy," as it were. By that, I mean explore all the different theories about the film, and try to ascertain their credibility on a case by case basis But then I suddenly realized what this dream of a film was actually about, and who exactly was dreaming it, and I'm still scraping pieces of my brain off the ceiling. I mean, it was a bolt from the blue.

And it call all be summed up in a single word.
Now, I finally understand why Kubrick was so obsessed for so long with making this picture.
