Paying tribute to pop culture influences - especially old TV shows -was common practice for The X Files. The Night Stalker himself, Darren McGavin, appeared on an episode as the agent who first discovered the X Files.

Ten Thirteen: Medusa, or Hiram Abiff Takes the T

The larger part of the Delta Cycle retelling in The X-Files began with the episode "Per Manum' and then took off with "This is Not Happening," which I think is the greatest single episode in the series' history. But immediately before "Per Manum" was "Medusa," which I never could wrap my head around.

Ten Thirteen: "The Search for God"

This past weekend, Chris Carter reiterated that The X-Files was "about the search for God." Interesting statement for a show about the search for extraterrestrial life. What did Chris Carter happen to discover about God in this search?

I was wondering why I put in my observation about the hidden 33 in the Bank of America logo in my Oscar sync post, but it turned out to be quite prescient; the entire stage set was filled with pairs and sets of threes.

Now that Ten Thirteen Productions is back up and running, making its grand re-entrance on the day before one of the more overtly Masonic Academy Awards ceremonies in recent history, I wanted to finish some long-brewing posts on the ostensible use of Masonic and Templar themes in Ten Thirteen programs.

More troubling news, this time a video rental franchise teetering on the brink of insolvency. Video stores were great places to go and immerse yourself in our once-vibrant movie culture. With that culture on the ropes, it's no surprise to see those stores begin to evaporate, joining independent bookstores and record stores.

Not only is it no accident that a Jung stand-in pushed Captain America into the ether just before Kirby's return, it may have even been intentional on the part of the writer, Marv Wolfman. 

The 70s were a pretty dreary decade, but it didn't lack for pop intellectualism. Marvel was full of writers who came in from the counter-culture, and a smart cookie like Marv Wolfman may well have realized that Kirby's obsession with the gods resonated with Jung's work.

After beating the New York Giants in Week 17, the New England Patriots are undone by a touchdown pass to Plaxico Burress (# 17) for a final score of 17-14. New England finish with an 18-1 record.

Narnia Business

Wow, look at the new Narnia poster. It's a good thing this is a Christian film, otherwise I'd think that sword shooting out of the Sun was supposed to be a solar phallus.

Killing Joker: Heath Ledger and the Dark Knight Working

Well, the story is out: Leave it to Page Six, the gossip page of Murdoch's New York Post to go there first. But given the eerie parallels between Heath Ledger's death and that of former Killing Joke bassist Paul Raven, the fact that Page Six ran a shot of Ledger wearing a knit cap made me sit up and take notice, since that was Raven's trademark look.
