Kirby Fever

What is a comics obsessive? A guy who hired artists to re-ink Kirby artwork he felt was badly done the first time around. The guy behind What If Kirby rounds up some of Kirby's classic inkers to undo the damage done by the controversial Vinnie Colletta and others. I don't hate Colletta nearly as much as a lot of other Kirby fans do, and his biography fascinates me, but it is a lot of fun to see some of the old Thor stuff reinked.

  1. IMHO, Vinnie was the hands-down best of the inkers back in the 60s and 70s. There was some sort of re-ink Thor challenge last year and guess what, nobody came close to inking it as well as Colletta did.

  2. Well, I'll take Vinnie's crowquill any day over Mike Royer's big black globs of goo. Vinnie brought a lot of charm and beauty to the table. Here's what Vinnie bashers won't ever admit- Vinnie was taken off Thor and sales went down, so Stan put him back on. Vinnie was taken off the Fourth World books and sales collapsed, never to recover. Vinnie had a very kid-friendly style and softened Jack's rough edges.

Plus from what I hear the guy was just an amazing character.
