Jeff Kripal needs no introduction to readers of this blog and there was no one else who I wanted to speak to for the first installment of what is sure to be a decidely occasional podcast series entitled The Secret Sun Radio Mystery Hour.
Jeff's been talking to a lot of people about his new book so I made sure that I hit him with questions that only someone like myself who's read his book in three separate drafts-- as well as his book on Eslaen-- would ask.
We save a lot of stuff (Kirby, Streiber, AAT) for future podcasts because I really wanted to talk about three main issues. First, what's a guy with the serious credentials that Jeff's got doing in our sandbox. Second, what the hell is this stuff we puzzle over and where does it come from. And yes, we did cover Jenny O'Connor and The Nine-- Jeff's thoughts may surprise you.
And third, is there a way we can use all of this gnosis to dig our way out of the rut we're all stuck in. We really don't talk much about comics or superheroes at all, more about practical paranormality if such a thing exists. If it doesn't I think it's damn high time someone creates it.
Here's the pitch for Jeff's book from his publisher. I can't possibly stress enough how highly recommended it is. If you're still reading this, you're the type of person whose life will be enriched by it, if not changed. In many ways, twentieth-century America was the land of superheroes and science fiction. From Superman and Batman to the Fantastic Four and the X-Men, these pop-culture juggernauts, with their "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men," thrilled readers and audiences—and simultaneously embodied a host of our dreams and fears about modern life and the onrushing future.
But that's just scratching the surface, says Jeffrey Kripal. In Mutants and Mystics, Kripal offers a brilliantly insightful account of how comic book heroes have helped their creators and fans alike explore and express a wealth of paranormal experiences ignored by mainstream science.
Delving deeply into the work of major figures in the field—from Jack Kirby’s cosmic superhero sagas and Philip K. Dick’s futuristic head-trips to Alan Moore’s sex magic and Whitley Strieber’s communion with visitors—Kripal shows how creators turned to science fiction to convey the reality of the inexplicable and the paranormal they experienced in their lives.
Expanded consciousness found its language in the metaphors of sci-fi—incredible powers, unprecedented mutations, time-loops and vast intergalactic intelligences—and the deeper influences of mythology and religion that these in turn drew from; the wildly creative work that followed caught the imaginations of millions.
Moving deftly from Cold War science and Fredric Wertham's anticomics crusade to gnostic revelation and alien abduction, Kripal spins out a hidden history of American culture, rich with mythical themes and shot through with an awareness that there are other realities far beyond our everyday understanding.
A bravura performance, beautifully illustrated in full color throughout and brimming over with incredible personal stories, Mutants and Mystics is that rarest of things: a book that is guaranteed to broaden—and maybe even blow—your mind.

Right-On!
Great interview, Chris. You asked some penetrating questions, and I think Kripal responded lucidly and honestly. Thank you for exposing me to this great writer and thinker. Plus, super-cool retro graphic of the new Mystery Hour!
Hey Chris, new article over at my site, an ultimate (although brief) definition of the Ancient Astronaut Theory, would much appreciate your comments. Thank you.
This may be shallow but I like your radio voice a lot! I listened to some but got interrupted so I will do it better justice tonight.

Good Lord...Every time I get on here my cognitive dissonance, normalcy bias gets railroaded...
thanks..
that was a great start to a hopefully ongoing series. i left a comment at the facebook page thanking you and Jeff for the invaluable guidance you've given with regards a balanced humane approach to myth, religion and sci-fi and pop culture. it led me to consider the value i have received from the secretsun content, and coupled with your recent mention of the 'honour system', (which resonated strongly; you can never completely eliminate guilt after a catholic education), i left a tangible token of my appreciation in your paypal account. i am not fishing for thanks, but as it had never really occurred to me, i thought maybe i might inspire anyone else who feels they have benefited as a result of your work and community, to consider the obligations implied in such a system.
I totally agree dboy- a monetary remembrance of appreciation is in line with all the tasty goodness we look forward to when we open the Secret Sun.
Thanks for everything Chris,
Best wishes, Delorus
