I don't go much for the paranormal. Not that I'm a disbeliever, necessarily - in fact, I expect we'll be seeing more and more weirdness manifesting as everything continues to spin apart. Whether this is all a function of neurology or interdimensional rifts or electromagnetic disturbances is hard to say, which is why I try not to spend too much time on the topic. My opinion is that if paranormal phenomena exists, it will have an ultra-normal explanation. Meaning there will be a science behind it, only one we don't yet understand.I've never had what I would consider a paranormal experience - certainly plenty of weird ones, but nothing I didn't think could be explained by (relatively) conventional means. And I'm not sure what happened the other night was paranormal, though it most certainly was weird. And I didn't really think too much of it until the synchronistic ripples began to appear on the face of the pond of consciousness.
And normally I wouldn't talk about it here, but Mike C! at Hidden Experience is a collector of these kinds of things and insisted that I do.
So with all of that prefacing, let me just explain what happened the other night. You decide for yourself what it all means.
It was around 10:45 PM, and I was taking my dog for a walk because I was really wound up. We were walking down the street and a figure came out of the woods and stepped into our path about 30 feet in front of us. It seemed as if it was completely white, which I interpreted at the time as white clothing. It stood beneath an overhanging branch so its head was completely in shadow. It was maybe a bit under 5 feet tall.
I would have thought it was a kid cutting through the woods, who was startled when he saw us on the street. Only it didn't react to us at all- it calmly came out of the woods and then stood under an overhanging branch, facing us.
It didn't make a sound the whole time- not a single sound, not even when it came out of the woods. No snapped twigs, no footfalls, nothing. This is a quiet summer night when every sound reverberates. It stood there facing us. Like it was waiting for us. That was weird.
The other weird thing is that my very loud, very excitable Collie didn't bark, even though I saw that she saw it too. If it were a person or a animal she would have barked her brains out, especially in a situation like that. She just stood there staring at it, like she was studying something new and interesting. She didn't seem to be frightened - fascinated, rather.
We looked at it for about a minute and then I backed her away, saying "Cmon." I got a very weird vibe once I started to process it. Granted, it was nighttime, but we were fairly close and I couldn't make the damn thing out, only a white figure that somehow didn't seem completely solid. It didn't move the whole time. I did pull out my cell phone in a vain attempt to light the scene but it was hopeless. It stayed there as we walked away and I didn't hear anything as we turned the corner. At all.
About a block away a strange and totally unfamiliar thought came into my head: "I've just seen a ghost." I've become aware of how I'm imposing a narrative familiarity on this event, that was really a lot weirder than I'm able to communicate. The word "ghost" is reductionist - it calls to minds a host of images and cultural associations that don't communicate the strangeness of this.
I went home and told my wife about it. She was fascinated and walked over to the spot looking for it. And while she looking around, our black cat came jumping out of the bushes and scared the hell out of her, exactly like some horror movie fake-out! And the next morning my dog woke me up by barking her head off- almost like a delayed reaction from the previous night.
Later that morning I drove down the same street on the way to drop off some papers. When I got to the corner I was startled by a large electronic traffic sign, which indicated that a serious hit and run accident had occurred the other day and the police were looking for tips. I haven't heard if the victim died.
This neighborhood has an interesting history. As I've written there's a lot of weird symbolism around, and there are six cemeteries in walking distance of my house (including the Necropolis). At the end of the street in question is a house built on the lot of an earlier house in which a firefighter died during an arson fire a year after we moved in.
A couple summers ago a young woman walked from the nearest cemetery (about three blocks away) into a speeding commuter train. The strange thing was that she wasn't even from the area.
It's these kinds of syncs- recent tragedies and violent deaths within a short distance of this encounter- that make me think a bit more seriously about an event I'd otherwise file away as a curiosity.
I mean, that's classic ghost stuff, right?
And plus, there's the whole thing with Aleister Crowley being buried not too far away.
If anyone has any theories, feel free to chime in.

Yup,
You saw yourself a ghost...
Cool!

Obviously the military/religious complex found out about your recent topic and sent a terminator back in time to stop you. Except it didn't work quite as planned.
But seriously, the high weirdness of the event to your extra-sensory perceptors is very cool, and something that movies have a very hard time replicating, try as they might.

Not to split hairs but I think paranormal and ultra-normal amount to about the same thing. Paranormal just means shit we don't currently understand. In that sense I think this site is virtually dedicated to the paranormal. Just my 2 cents.
Sounds like a ghost to me. Eerie as hell.
No idea.
I like how you say "ghost" is reductionist. It's also presumptive.
I know that if you fully embrace science as a source of real information about the world, you have to become comfortable with "I don't know" as an answer to some things.
We do not know how life originated. We do not know why the "big bang" happened. We do not know why Planck's constant is what it is. We do not know quite why human intelligence took off.
People don't like "I don't know." Not only is it discomforting and insulting to our narcissistic desire to be know-it-alls, but anyone who answers this way to a question is automatically deemed to be of lower social status. Our social brain doesn't like it. If ten people are asked what the moon is, nine of them say "I don't know," and the tenth says "it's made of cheese" then the tenth is now in charge of our space program.
But sometimes it's the right answer. I bet it's the right answer here.
Hello, id just like to share a similar story i had when i was about 13.
well it was about 3:30 am, and i was walking home from a friends house. so im walking in the road that is extremely dark at this
time of night.
as i am walking i notice a little girl in a white dress with her hands slightly crossed in front of her and her head down, walking on the opposite side of the road near the forest.
well i keep walking thinking nothing of it really until i get about 10 feet past where i had first looked over at her, and i turn around to look again and she was gone. right then, that sent a
chilling fear running through my bones and i ran for more then a mile to my house. and true to the myth i was pale as i had ever been.
still to this day i can see that glowing little girl clearly. it so
happens there was an old deaf camp for kids off a ways into the forest near where i had seen the "ghost". and the most intriguing part of it to me , is that the road is named Kasper ^.^

You know Chris, I'm a black woman from the Deep South who is old enough to remember my great grandmother discussing "haints, ghosts, spirits and demons" as if she were talking about the weather. I think this open acknowledgement of the unseen and unknown things of life has made me less likely to dismiss events like those that happened to you as some easily categorized thing. I hope you will forgive my presumption that you need or want any kind of advice but I'm gonna offer some to you anyway, courtesy of my great gran. My great gran would have told you to not worry, to just sit back and watch and wait but above all to pay attention. You have demonstrated your ability to connect the dots with this excellent blog so keep doing what you're doing. If something needs to be revealed to you it will be. Whatever it was, if it was anything at all, wants your attention. I'd say it certainly made a good job of grabbing it. Thanks for such a great blog. I really enjoy it.

Check out Karen Elson's "The Ghost Who Walks". It's a ghost story / song by Jack White's wife.
http://hermeticallyblond.blogspot.com/2010/09/karen-elson-ghosts-who-walks.html
What were the ghosts intentions?
Did the ghost have a will? Did it desire to have a specific effect by standing there? Is quietly standing there in a mysterious manner the essence of it's intended message? By not saying anything or being anywhere near comprehendible, it achieved a portion of its intended effect, it communicated "free your mind" or something? Or is there no meaning. The ghost was like a luminous human-shaped question mark with no words before it?
What were the ghosts effects?
How do ghosts / apparitions traditionally effect people? They cause them to be uneasy and afraid. They convey a mild sense of threat somehow. Is that because they’re unexpected or because their bizarre behavior is not what acculturated humans expect, and so in that sense they’re like the ultimate outsider? It's kind of weird that ghost stories are so frequently associated with scariness and tragedy. Is that because of something people bring to the encounter, or because of the nature of the entity?
Some other questions…
When witnessing something ghost-like most people would assume that it was formerly human. Why? Maybe it was pre-human, like a pre-incarnating soul just taking a gander at things before settling into its new human abode? Or maybe it’s a cryptoterrestrial whose cloaking technology was running low on power? Is the ghost emitting light? If so, how? Or is just reflecting light? If so, why only white light instead of other colors? How come ghosts are only white/grey, never taupe or pink or yellow-orange? I got no answers.
If I ever saw a ghost, I think my brain would explode with a hundred million more questions than I could possibly be expected to answer, but this is all I got for now.
Anyway, interesting story! I’m jealous. I want to see ghosties.
This wouldn't've been Tuesday nite would it've been? I was watching MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS on cable Tuesday nite, right? I've... kind of come in contact with certain people over the years who knew the real people whom the Clooney and Bridges characters are based on... that movie was reminding me of stuff at the periphery of my consciousness; I said to myself halfway thru the movie... "I'm going to try a little experiment when this movie's over." So I don't know how much detail to go into, but within a couple of minutes I was literally looking at my cat Fred and saying "DID YOU SEE WHAT JUST HAPPENED?" Then I said to the cat, "I've got to go out into the parking lot for some fresh air and look if I can see the moon," and out there ANOTHER weird thing happened!!! The past 2 days I have simply stopped worrying about the future... if I could harness this more consistently YES I could be a SERIOUS Psychic Detective!
TD- Could be. It'll be interesting to see if it happens again.
1219- Yep. Chinese Theocracy is born.
Michael- You can't help but wonder about the timing.
105- Interesting. Are those Left Behind stories still popular?
106- That's cool. It's all semantics, right?
112- It was certainly eerie. And I'm glad I wrote it all down close to the event because your memory keeps rewriting that kind of event as time passes.
AdamI- Exactly. It was a very strange event that I can only communicate by using that kind of reductive terminology. But I really want to be careful not to reduce it to just a "ghost sighting. " It may well be part of something even stranger.
Travis- Kasper! I love it! And what's with the white thing? This thing didn't look like it was glowing or anything. Hmmmm....
Califia- My pleasure- happy to have you! It's funny- I had this notion that I was going to pick September 1st to get serious about focusing on certain issues and this crazy thing happens. Certainly the last thing I'd expect. But as I said it had these interesting connections to other events in the immediate area. I'll definitely keep you all posted as to any further developments.
Palisade- Well, like I said "ghost" is kind of a limiting description. I'm classifying it as an anomaly. But one thing's for certain- I'm glad my dog was with me and I'm glad she obviously saw it too. And like I said if the figure was a person she would've barked her brains out, like she always does.
Ned- Well, right on then. Keep us posted if you have any more details to share.
I know of someone (Poppy) who was driving by Stonehenge one night with her boyfriend and they parked up and got out to look at the full moon, when apparently a figure that was dark (not white) and almost giant blob like came chasing up the track after them. They ran and didn't look back. She also says she saw an red/orange orb flowing the car just before it happened which is why she really, really wanted to stop. Although her boyfriend had no interest in the orb. When they quickly got back into the car and drove off, they found a banana which was ok before this happened had gone all rotten as though they had lost time. After this happened she felt haunted for a while. That 'i'm haunted' stuff went away with time. She did a talk about it recently to a crowd of people (badgered into it) and since then she claims to be 'haunted' all over again. Her words 'it has come back again". Another strange thing is that she has developed MS. Which I have found is actually thought to have connections with Ley lines and Earth's energies.
Grave yards and churches are also connected with ley lines and Earth's energies. Ley lines are thought to be roads for the deceased/spirits/ghosts.
Extraterrestrials if you ask me as the energy we are talking about travels around the Universe. I'm glad you talked about Cocoon in your previous post. It contains the ET side of things and also the healing power that Earth's energies can bring.
I had forgotten about that film. I have had too many experiences to talk about on here, maybe I should add them to my blog along with the paranormal artwork I do. Your an artist right Chris? It opens up the channels apparently. Last winter I went through a weird time of it that lasted a few months, it was weird because it was as though all the questions that were in my mind were being answered. If I ask a question in my mind I then was either given or I strangely found an answer. At times it was as though I had a hundred people talking to me all at once. Even about the Civil war that took place on my doorstep years ago. Most of it was clues, a bit like when you do a crossword. I think ghosts/spirits like to play games. I think we run a mile from it for fear of being possessed or maybe having our brains sucked out. Witchcraft the film gave me the heebee geebees when it came out years ago as I used to use a weegeeboard with my schoolmates. I don't know why we did that at lunchtimes but that was also an eye opener.
Chris,
Any chance you could get me a latitude/GPX for the Crowley site so I can Google Earth it? You won't believe what I just discovered, but I want to confirm this before going further.
The film I am on about is called Witchboard not witchcraft - 1983. I watched it in 1985/6 as a teen.
And then there is Hellraiser. Oh boy. I watched the lot one day whilst trippin with mates (long time ago now) - really not recommended. Probably a source of fear when it comes to the paranormal for anyone that has watched those films. (Ah and poltergeist films). I have not watched a single scary looking film since that day. It's just plain self-abuse. If there is such a thing. My spiritual/ghostly encounters have always been about love (sometimes message for me or others) and not really scary at all. I have found that kind of contact to be very helpful at times. Maybe something or someone is trying to tell you something or warn you. Something you want to know. Ask yourself what do you want to know the answer to, what has been playing on your mind - it might just give you a helping hand. First you have got to believe that 'it' exists. I can't not - but then I always try to pretend I don't - why is that? Weird. I re-write the experience and tell myself Na when I know deep down 'it' happened.
Just found this...

when looking for something else that is very similar. Spiritual Warriors? What ever next!
I think you're right about the terminology we use being reductionist, especially in relation to the unknown... or, I suppose, the not readily-known. We have learned much from science, yes, but I think too many scientists forget that the area has itself evolved over time. Consider the past 500 years, with the Copernican revolution, Newtonian physics, quantum physics, etc.
My wife is a rationalist, and she likes to understand things from that persepctive. Her work as an academic demands it as well. Nonetheless, she has in the past year confessed to me that she can strongly sense unusual phenomena. The first time she told me about this, it related to apparent "spirits" she saw at my father's girlfriend's house. She told me this when I said to her that I got "weird vibes" while we were there. I vaguely sensed something, and she actually saw something.
My wife has told me about more in the past year. For instance, on a trip to a professional conference, she stayed at the house of a colleague. One night, she saw the recently-deceased mother of her colleague, watering a plant around 3 AM.
My wife also had some interesting experiences on a recent trip to Australia. She found something strange about the capital Canberra, which prompted me to find out about esoteric aspects of its design and/or location. (Surprise, it does.) She also met a psychic at a market in Sydney, who charged her nothing for a session and thought that she should develop her abilities. She had a few other experiences, but the aforementioned are just examples.
I don't have the same abilities myself (certainly not to the same degree, anyway), but I have no reason to believe that my wife doesn't.
I don't have an accurate layout of your surrounding neighborhood in my head, so it's hard to fully wrap my mind around the area.
You shared with me that you were: "really wound up" when you took your dog for a walk. This is interesting, because certain synchronicities can occur when one is agitated. Not sure what to make of this, but it is a point worth noting.
The total silence is something that gets reported in both UFO and ghost reports.
It is most curious that your black cat was at that exact same spot when you went back to check out the location with your wife. Does your cat stay that far from your house? Is it unusual for the cat to be sen in that area? Did the cat act oddly (like the dog did) when it popped out of the bushes?
You say you got "a weird vibe" from it, and this is another thing to factor into the mix. If it was just a trick of the light, you might have been momentarily frightened, but a "weird vibe" implies something else.
Ghost? Alien? Angel? Demon? Faerie? Nature spirit? Inter-Dimensional entity? Or, just a trick of the light on a dark street. But, I suspect you would have figured it out if it was just a funny shadow that "looked" like the outline of a small person. Or, if it was a kid dressed in light clothing.
You speak openly about seeing a Leprechaun in you youth, and this is another curious point to factor in.
I lump synchronicities and paranormal events (and UFO sightings) all into the same bowl of soup. If you were "really wound up" it might be postulated that you were somehow emotionally *open* to this kind of event. Is it common for you to walk your dog at almost 11 PM?
Question: Was there anything at all proceeding this experience? Any plea to the universe? Were you wresting with any deep questions? Any quandaries that seemed profound? My point is, were you AKSING something (consciously or subconsciously) and could this event been a reply.
Question: Have you crawled into the bushes at that location to see if there is anything unusual at that spot???
also - Huge thanks for your report.
Chris,
I've had many high-weirdness encounters in my life, and when I think I've got a pretty good handle on them I discover new peices of information that usually complicate instead of clarifying the picture.
I'm not suggesting this will be true in your case, but sometimes I've had an encounter that I thought was deeply spooky only to discover a fairly rational explanation - but then later still I've discovered extreme weirdness and synchs around the event that I myself 'debunked'. It's like certain events seem so incredible and strange but I find a reasonable answer or even have one proved to me, I file the event away as being understood and ordinary, yet later find such bizarre weirdness around the explained event (usually along the lines I was thinking in the first place but far weirder)that I'm left reeling. The event was not what I thought, yet I discovered things around that event that spoke to my original interpretations, though broadening them considerably.
It makes me ask the following question, 'Why did a misunderstood event prove to have genuine anomalies around it that feel thematically consistent?' Is it the Creative Mind at work, the meeting of the conscious and subconscious in a way that somehow negates space and time? Did I experience a kind of internal psychological conversation that somehow appeared external?
I know how strange the world is, and yet I'm aware of how little I know despite all I've seen and experienced. That said, I'd offer the suggestion that the 'paranormal' is happening all the time, but there is indeed a science behind it that we don't fully understand. I suspect this is what true magic is; a form of alchemical science beyond the current horizon of our sight. Thanks for sharing your experience publicly. It takes balls to share this kind of stuff, especially when you can't fully explain or understand it yourself.
Peace.
Did you have to go and say silence Mike? This is something that is already playing on my little brain.
'3) The Key of Silence -- The 49th Key is a non-vocal, non-local operation involving the 93rd Governor and the Round Tablet of Navlage. The operation itself consists of vibrating the name of the Governor mentally to activate the sphere of space around the planet, then unfolding into that space the geometric structure of the Round Tablet. The Call is silent, because only a telepathic push, as opposed to a physical or sonic push, can open the communication channel.'

I can't sleep as it is!
The stone face on the cover of that magazine looks a lot like L. Ron Hubbard.
Wootie- I've come to realize that we're surrounded by things we don't understand but our brains have evolved to filter them out. That's why an alteration in brain chemistry increases the likelihood of perceiving things others don't notice. Cool stories there, btw. Watching Hellraiser while tripping? Ay yi yi!
Ben- I don't offhand, I'm sorry. Try "Hampton, NJ"
624- Well, like I said our brains have evolved to function within certain parameters. It's astonishing to me how much totally non-paranormal information most people filter out. I do think we're on the cusp of a leap in this regard, so maybe all of this insanity will be taken more seriously.
Raj- Here's how I see it- you throw a stone into a pond. It sinks to the surface. The only information you have to prove that that event took place is the ripples on the surface. That to me is the function of these synchronicities. I wasn't still thinking about the event until a further event - the hit and run- came to my attention relating to the location the next morning. Then I started putting some pieces together. The event itself was over- I had no expectation it would have repeated itself. But it was a disruption of a pattern of a normal event.
The thing that fascinates me is that if I hadn't discussed it right away on FB I would have probably rewritten it in my memory and filed it away. In fact if my dog hadn't reacted so strangely to it I would have just thought it was a kid cutting through the woods. In this case I had another perception to weigh my own against. Maybe I have had similar events, which I basically flushed because I was alone.
On to Mike's points next...
Mike C's notes in italic:
The total silence is something that gets reported in both UFO and ghost reports.
Yeah-somebody comes out of the woods onto the blacktop there's sound. I saw the movement in the woods and tracked it so my ears were pricked up. Nothing. Weird.
It is most curious that your black cat was at that exact same spot when you went back to check out the location with your wife. Does your cat stay that far from your house? Is it unusual for the cat to be sen in that area? Did the cat act oddly (like the dog did) when it popped out of the bushes?
I don't know- I wasn't there. The cat does travel pretty far- she followed my wife to the spot. Maybe something spooked her as well. The thing that cracked me up is that the whole scenario was like something out of a Scooby Doo cartoon or a really cheesey horror movie. Or Legend of Hell House.
You say you got "a weird vibe" from it, and this is another thing to factor into the mix. If it was just a trick of the light, you might have been momentarily frightened, but a "weird vibe" implies something else.
Well, like I've said I've reduced it to communicate the events. It was much weirder than my story lets on.
The weird vibe was a reaction to the thing's behavior. I've never encountered anything like it. I've encountered other walkers in the dark on countless occasions. This wasn't like that. Plus, the silence, plus Linda's strange reaction. I wasn't nervous or startled when I saw the movement in the woods- my first reaction was that it was a kid.
Ghost? Alien? Angel? Demon? Faerie? Nature spirit? Inter-Dimensional entity? Or, just a trick of the light on a dark street. But, I suspect you would have figured it out if it was just a funny shadow that "looked" like the outline of a small person. Or, if it was a kid dressed in light clothing.
Yeah, it wasn't a quick flash. We looked at it for about a minute, which is a longer time than it sounds when you're facing some strange thing in the dark.
You speak openly about seeing a Leprechaun in you youth, and this is another curious point to factor in.
Well, that was an hallucination, but your point is taken.
I lump synchronicities and paranormal events (and UFO sightings) all into the same bowl of soup. If you were "really wound up" it might be postulated that you were somehow emotionally *open* to this kind of event. Is it common for you to walk your dog at almost 11 PM?
It's not abnormal. I take her out every night in the yard to do her business.
Question: Was there anything at all proceeding this experience? Any plea to the universe? Were you wresting with any deep questions? Any quandaries that seemed profound? My point is, were you AKSING something (consciously or subconsciously) and could this event been a reply.
Well actually, I did pick that day to buckle down and get some busy work done and whatnot. September 1st and all- now I've put it off until after Labor Day!
Question: Have you crawled into the bushes at that location to see if there is anything unusual at that spot???
Nope, but I've driven past it a couple times.
I hear you. These things really are about pattern-recognition, the disturbances in normal perception, and the ability to juggle intuition and reason when high-wierdness events occur.
Thanks, brother.
Hate to be a bother, but can you give me some Hampton landmarks around the vicinity of the site? If not, I can probably figure it out.
Word verification: "stickle"...
'cause I'm such a stickler...
I don't have the information handy. What are you after?
Trying to figure the latitude as close as possible... I'll explain shortly...
I do see in one Streets panorama what looks to be a dairy farm, "Grochowicz (sp?) Farms"(?) with a little billboard saying "Think Ice Cream" off New Jersey 31/Main St.
Really fascinating, I have always been in the "I don't know" camp, one can never really discount anything, I have never encountered anything Paranormal, but I wish I could. I do have to agree that we have built in filters that limit our perception, it's one of the reasons why I suspect LSD has had such a major impact for those who have had experiences with it.
LSD or no LSD - there is much more to life than meets the eye. We are just kept so busy busy and told not to think, and not to medal with the unknown and not to ask any questions...because you might just get an answer. Mental divining is something that I think we all do, without even knowing we are. It is silent. When you think to yourself 'where did I put my keys? 'it' hears you. This kind of thing works better if you say it allowed though. Or is you make sure you open up the (telergic/telluric) channels first. Oh and sit on a energy source.
We often pat ourselves on the back for being so cleaver or lucky when we find something or figure something out when in fact we should probably be saying a big thanks to the spirit world. What ever shape or form that takes. For that is often what guides us. I do still feel like a mushroom mind you - kept in the dark and feed on poo.
Great post - love it.
By the way, that is what praying is all about. You ask for guidance. It is also interesting how (unseen) energies work when you put your hands together to pray. There's that 'story' about a woman in America that was stuck in traffic due to an accident that had happened up the road. She was apparently say in her car praying for those who were in the accident and other people saw a spiral of energy coming out from the roof of her car.
It somehow connects you I reckon. Churches are built on energy sources for this very reason and the stone they are made out of has a huge impact on it. The architecture of a Church is designed to make sure the energy is all positive (good), as opposed to negative (bad). Clapping your hand apparently warns off bad spirits - makes sure that the energy is positive in the same way as using chimes or Church bells. Some people go around their houses saying thanks but no thanks good by and usher the energies out of their homes. Then there is the old stories of standing on one leg - to break the magic (bad luck) of fairies. No smoke without fire. Sounds like you are surrounded by positive (good) energy to me Chris. No barking is a very good sign.
NASA: Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun?
Hey Chris, I think you may have seen your inner child. Don't know much about that stuff but it hit me as I drove off in my car earlier. Looks like other people have got lots to say about inner child white ghosts from doing a quick search online. Spooky!
I put an account of the Experiment on Facebook because the glamorous Canadian Courtney Sunley Smith synchronistically asked me if I 'believed'. It involved two totally different 'Dictionaries of Symbols', different authors, different publishers, opened at random...
You've been initiated. There's no turning back now. Expect things to get stranger and stranger. Hold on to your hat. It's going to be a bumpy ride.
How long did it take to process the encounter?
Do you have any regrets? Like, not investigating the situation a little more?
Despite the initial weirdness, did the idea of walking closer and examining the petite translucent shadow figure more thoroughly never even cross your mind?
You work in a creative profession which explains why you're probably more likely to notice such oddities.
A lot of people these days operate in autopilot. A Unicorn could be grazing on their lawn and they wouldn't lift up their eyes.
I mean, I doubt a teacher getting ready for the start of the new school year has time to wonder about the strange shadow they saw while walking their fussy Bichon Frise fifteen minutes before Leno's opening monologue.
At the same time, I wonder if the extraordinary underestimate us?
The sychs are obvious and definitely exist, they just assume we're too wrapped up in earthly matters to take notice.
Or maybe the shadow-thing is on the phone with tech support because their stargate's invisibility app malfunctioned. [“At first I thought it was the update so I rolled back the negative refraction driver but it's still not recognizing the gold molecules so it must be something hardware related.” “No, it did not get wet...”]
Anyway, my family has a saying for unlikely situations; like finding the perfect parking spot on a Saturday afternoon or meeting Daryl Hannah while waiting on line at Starbucks:
“You should go play the lotto.”
BTW, NJ is the only state that allows you to decide between annuity and lump sum after winning.
...What? It's not the stupid people tax if you use legitimate situations to validate your purchase.

Did you notice you posted that at 11:11AM??
"If anyone has any theories, feel free to chime in."
Chris,
Here's a speculative short story regarding your anomaly:
An alien from another dimension (or density) ingested something equivalent to ayahuasca in his home world and went on a spirit-journey to our density/dimension. Why? The alien had an interest in comprehending other levels of reality. Upon arrival, he was shocked to discover a very different landscape here; things that we take for granted about our physical world were absurd to him, even the physics took some getting used to. The alien had never seen a human being or dogs and was simultaneously intrigued and spooked by you.
He had been advised by his tribe's guru that human beings would not be able to see or hear him. Thus it puzzled him when he noticed that you were apparently staring right at him, and so he was a bit scared about what else you could possibly do to him. Like a fearful squirrel, he decided to stay as still as possible, knowing that some humans (like animals) tend to fixate on or even attack (a) what moves or (b) what is considered to be an intruder. Also at first, the "tripping" alien wasn't sure if you were truly looking directly at him or at something nearby or even behind him.
You were gazing upon what consciousness sometimes looks like when it is un-obscured by a physical body. The reason you saw him as a glowing area is that his physical body was still in his home world and only a portion of his consciousness was exploring New Jersey, of all places. Or maybe something about the recent tragic accident in the vicinity caused ripples in the aether that made it so that the travelling bits of consciousness would glow when they ordinarily wouldn’t.
Part 2
My assumption is that the anomaly was sentient to some degree or another and that is was capable of fear or at least high alertness. But perhaps it wasn’t afraid. Perhaps in its alien culture, absolute stillness and complete quiet is the manner in which face-to-face interactions normally take place on account of its primary communication method is telepathic rather than audio/visual. Perhaps although you heard nothing but silence from the anomaly, the anomaly was telepathically receiving everything you and the dogs were feeling as well as what you were imagining/thinking. Perhaps it was motionless because it could hardly turn itself away from the psychic outpouring from the dogs and you.
In conclusion, maybe (a) the anomaly was a scared "reverse-ayahuasca" drug tripper from another dimension of reality. Or (b) the anomaly was a calm “reverse-ayahuasca” drug tripper from another dimension of reality who was casually receiving telepathic bits of trivia from yourself and your two dogs.
Although the alien might have learned a great deal about our world during his drug trip / spirit quest, he will remember his curious encounter with a real human being with particular fondness.
Thanks for sharing your ghostly experience. Patrick Harpur lucidly explains this sort of phenomenon in his book _Daimonic Reality_, if you're not familiar with it.
Hot off the presses:
"If every habitable world in the universe is unique, and the precise chemical conditions of a planet helps shape the life that evolves there, then avatars could allow aliens to visit other worlds from the safety of their spaceship. Could it be that all the stories of alien encounters on Earth were really encounters with alien avatars? Maybe aliens don't actually look like grey humanoids with large eyes and no noses. Instead, that haunting image may simply be what we look like to them."

レベッカ - "How long did it take to process the encounter?"
Well, I'm not sure, but I'm glad I started talking about it on FB as soon as it happened. My memory has a weird habit overwriting disturbing events. For instance when I returned to the area I realized that I was a lot closer to it than my memory was picturing.
"Do you have any regrets? Like, not investigating the situation a little more? "
Not really! That kind of thing isn't really my bag and I didn't like the vibe.
"Despite the initial weirdness, did the idea of walking closer and examining the petite translucent shadow figure more thoroughly never even cross your mind?"
I investigated as much I was comfortable with.
Anonymous- Interesting, but not really on topic.
John- Not until you mentioned it!
Palisade- This one was for you: "If every habitable world in the universe is unique, and the precise chemical conditions of a planet helps shape the life that evolves there, then avatars could allow aliens to visit other worlds from the safety of their spaceship. Eccentric- I'm not, but a lot of people keep mentioned Harpur's work so maybe I should look into it.
