The Secret Sun on Occult of Personality

I had a great talk with Greg from Occult of Personality a few months back and the first part of it is up on the site now.

In podcast episode 68, we’re joined again by Christopher Knowles. Chris is the author of the Eagle Award-winning “Our Gods Wear Spandex: The Secret History of Comic Book Heroes,” published by Red Wheel/Weiser and co-author of “The Complete X-Files: Behind the Series, the Myths, and the Movies,” published by Insight Editions. This time, Chris joins us for a very in-depth discussion about the themes explored in his blog, “The Secret Sun”.

Chris describes his research as modern mythology, alt-history and pop-cult symbology. We begin our conversation as he describes the Sun from a variety of perspectives, including scientific, symbolic, mythological, and religious. He traces some of the beginnings of solar symbolism and how these origins informs his work. By examining current events with a focus on symbolism and synchronicity, his work uncovers many interesting correspondences.

Greg and I also did a separate talk on Carl Jung which I believe he will be making available to subscribers. Occult of Personality promotes positive, counter-cultural esotericism, which is very important indeed in an environment where these themes are increasingly a part of our cultural conversation. I know a lot of you out there are on Greg's wavelength and may not be familiar with his podcast, so this gives you a good introduction.

UPDATE: Men Who Stare at Goats trailer here. Looks very funny, but McGregor's wavering accent is a bit distracting.

UPDATE II: This is the book by Cheiro I was talking about.

  1. Great interview, sorry to hear about your problem with mushrooms. For Christopher and others I highly recommend the Peyote Way church in Arizona. Very good people, they know how to set the stage for your own personal experience.

  2. I'll take that under advisement. The problem is New Jersey-it's a giant swamp, filled with black magic and toxic mold. Once I'm out of here I'm sure things will improve, in every way.

  5. Man, hearing Greg's voice really takes me back to when I was first really getting into this stuff, especially since I haven't heard his podcast since around then.

I agree 100% with your views on TV. Makes it really hard to do research, and I think it might be intentional.

    Interesting discussion.

  6. A common theme i see with your work is that man might not be natural to earth and man's desire to leave earth. This reminded me of an article in Cabinet magazine. It is about a man that lives underground without seeing the sun for two month and then again for six months. From the article.

" But the important thing is that we proved that there was an internal clock independent of the natural terrestrial day/night cycle. "

  8. I just heard your interview with Greg today, and the discussion about the color of Ra's sun made me think of something -- afterimage.

Every color in the visible spectrum has a counterpart. If you stare at a red circle for about 30 seconds, and then shift your gaze to a white surface, you'll see an afterimage of a turquoise circle -- because turquoise is red's counterpart color.

We see afterimages when we close and/or rub our eyes. Hallucinogens increase the persistence of afterimages, and our awareness of them. If, as you suggested, entheogens were a key component to ice age theology, it makes me wonder if a green sun with a ring/halo might not be the afterimage of a sunrise/sunset (when the sun is more look-at-able).

The color green being an afterimage would depend on the color of the sun when observed. I don't know what shade of green Ra's sun was, nor the shade of a rising winter solstice Siberian sun 9,000 years ago. But when I was looking up some info on this, I found that staring at the rising and setting sun is an old meditative technique (just references to such practices, I haven't found any direct explanations yet).

I also found some info on green flashes on the sun during sunrises and sunsets. This phenomenon was once thought to be afterimages. It turns out it's a real event that happens on prairies and oceans during sunrises and sunsets, when atmospheric conditions and the curvature of the earth allow for a one-second flash of green refraction.

  9. I think this show is the greatest in the history of OOP.

Loved the metaphor we as the leaves on trees and the importance of staying in the question-mode.

    peace
