(Egyptian) Girls Gone Wild

BALTIMORE - Today, it sounds like a spring-break splurge on the order of "Girls Gone Wild": Drink huge quantities of beer, get wasted, indulge in gratuitous sex and pass out — then wake up the next morning with the music blaring and your friends praying that everything will turn out all right.

But back in 1470 B.C., this was the agenda for one of ancient Egypt's most raucous rituals, the "festival of drunkenness," which celebrated nothing less than the salvation of humanity. Archaeologists say they have found evidence amid the ruins of a temple in Luxor that the annual rite featured sex, drugs and the ancient equivalent of rock 'n' roll.

Amazing- you mean to tell me that the Baby Boomers didn't invent sex 'n' drugs 'n' rock 'n' roll at Woodstock? I'm shocked. Some hippies must have built a time machine and introduced these practices to the Egyptians.

Indeed! I remember going to South America when I was 18 and seeing this ancient pottery depicting total porno depravity -- every sex act you could imagine. It blew my mind! "i didn't know that did that stuff back then."

Somehow my pea brain believed what society told me about the sexual revolution of the 60's. I thought that people only had chaste sexual relations before the beats and the hippies changed everything.

Just another in a long series of lies told to us in school.

  2. They proved ancient Egyptian mummies had cocaine on them.

Yet our history for these times says Europeans only discovered the New World, where coke comes from, in the 1400s.

Funny that. How did they have coke in Egypt then, thousands of years earlier.

  4. This does not surprise me. Check out the Pompeii paintings in the brothels advertising their services. Quite graphic indeed.

The Sheela Na Gig also comes to mind.

The ancient peoples were not as hung up about sexuality as we are today.

Besides, a bunch of drunken hotties never hurt anyone :)

  5. The human brain hasn't changed any since the AA's last messed with it- why wouldn't we get turned on by the same things?
